I'm new enough to running and at the moment am getting by with a couple of decent bits of gear and lots of crappy old t-shirts, and I’m trying to pick up pieces of decent gear bit by bit. I'm heading to New York shortly and will have 1 day to do a bit of shopping. I’m not into shopping at all, but thought it might be a good opportunity to pick up some running gear at a good price? Can anyone recommend any decent shops to save me having to trudge around aimlessly? And are there any bargains in particular I should be looking out for? I’m a laydee if that makes any difference!!! :D

There should be Nike/Addidas stores at some of the outlets. I picked up some stuff there.

Last time I went to Tanger outlets - it's about an hour outside NYC. Found it better than Woodbury Common. Haven't been to Jersey Gardens yet though. But yeah, should find what you're looking for there.

    Outlets aren't great.
Adidas would be the better of the main ones though.
Asics being european aren't any cheaper in the states so unless you are buying nike/adidas shoes it's not really worth it.
Lunarglides are a fair ($80 - €50) bit cheaper but are hard got in common sizes.

Footlocker on times square are usually good enough, the exchange rate alone should see you do well out of it.

If you get to Jersey Gardens:

    If in Manhattan try:
    Champs
    Modells
    New Balance
    Foot Locker
    Paragon Sports
    Nike beside Central Park
Adidas which is downtown beside NYU

Thanks for those suggestions. I will probably try to avoid the outlets as it's a bit of a waste travelling all the way out when I only want to shop for an hour or two. So more suggestions in manhattan would be great!

I've found the Super Runners Shop a good bet. They aren't huge shops but are specialist running stores. They also havve a few shops around the city, so there should be one close to you. I've been to the one on Amsterdam Ave, which had a lot of gear if you'll be near there, and the one on Court St in Brooklyn.

Jack Rabbit Sports are also good for running gear

Have also dropped cash on running gear at City Sports - they are fine if you know what you are looking for (ie, tights, a running vest, shirts...), but not great if you are looking for gait analysis for shoes.

    Have fun!

Thanks all - plenty of spots for me to check out when I'm over there!

If it's running gear you want and you are a laydeee, then if NY doesn't work out that well for you, get thee down to TK MAxx.

The OH took up the running in Jan ( I KNOW!!) and the amount of gear (top brands) she picked up in TK Maxx for ~€110 was truly astounding.
I've often had a snoop in the mens "leisure/sports" wear section and came out empty-handed, but the gear on offer in the ladies section was a revalation.

    Go to

    New Balance
    821 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10022-7502
    (212) 421-4444‎

The shop also has a sign "Super Runners Shop" over the door

Third Avenue between 50th and 51st. I get my Gel Kayanos when I'm over there. They usually have good offers on the other gear too. Anything I've ever got there works out about half the price for over here. If you can get the Russian sales assistant, do - he's an ultra runner, sub 3Hr for NY marathon and knows his stuff.
