im going to send this to hunting aswell. i think some of the lads there may be able to help you as regard binoculars as they would need them for spotting etc.

Let's see if I get this model name right...

I have a pair of Opticron Imagic BGA SE 8x42. I mostly use them for out on the hill when I'm looking for sheep. I find them really good to be honest. I think I paid around £329 for them online somewhere. I'm not sure about horse racing what the normal magnification or size would be but they're great for what I use them for. The glass is bright and clear which is good for Ireland's dull overcast days. I would reccomend them.

Does the person you are buying them for already have a pair of binoculars?

If so try to check if they are a big pair or a smaller pocket type pair. If they are used to carrying a small pair around they might find it hard to adjust to using the bigger pair and find them awkward.

I have a handy sized pocket pair I use for racing and they do the job fine, wouldn't be that au fait with magnifications, brands or anything though.

For horseracing I would look at a waterproof pocket-size pair, 7x25 or 8x30.
The two numbers on binoculars denote the magnification and the amount of light allowed into the lenses. A pair of 10x magnifies ten times so at 100 yards a horse will appear as if it were at 10 yards away from you. The higher the numbers also means the optics are more expensive.
The higher the magnification number e.g. 10x the more shake is noticeable. That is why birdwatchers use tripods. The second number is not really an issue because lack of light is not a problem in daytime racing, but a high number has a wider lens so it has an impact on size & weight. (x25 will allow less light than x30, so the image will be slightly darker.)
Personally for the boat I use cheapo pairs, about €25 or less 'cos if the get wet/lost/borrowed it is no big deal.

    www.pixmania.ie is worth a look,
