America - Love It Or Hate It?

Not many people seem to have middling opinions on 'The States' and it's politics etc., it's usually either one or the other. Personally I'm a lover!

Why? To be honest I have deep affection for lots of things that came out of the states, especially cars, music, clothing styles and did I say cars? Yeah, the Japs improved greatly on most US technology and Europe has more 'style' but to me the US were the pioneers of all that is cool! Doesn't mean I'm a fan of their politics but if I had to answer one way or another I'm a fan!

    How about you?

Are we talking about culture here? I love America for it's beat generation culture and the free love era. I despise it for it's O.C. culture. It's like the Simpsons, it should have stopped many years ago

Here's a comment: People look at The US [and its citizenry] like they look at China or the Gay Community Israelites the Catholic Church Blacks Polish Travelers etc. You either like it, accept it, criticize it, or discriminate against it. You'll find plenty of all on here.

Let's not forget they also gave us Britney Spears, Steve Wilkos, various different wars and Bill O'Reilly.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I voted that I love it, but I hate it's Foreign Policies and everything that comes with it.

I lived there for 18 months during my late teen years. There's so much more to do, and the people really are welcoming

They're so happy compared to here, I don't know if that's because they're just slow or full of Happy Meals, it doesn't matter anyway

Of the dozens of people I got drunk with and discussed the stuff going on in the world, about 70% of them agreed that the US was playing a large part in fcuking things up, that's why I like America

Theres no grey areas in this poll so ill go with Love It.
We liked taking the piss outta George Bush, we rolleyes at their "have a nice day" happy clappy attitude to life and they seem to have an aversion to low calorie foods which makes them ripe for fat jokes but ya know secretly, deep down, we admire and respect those crazy yanks!

Canada is better. Got all the same things there but with less stupidity. I voted undecided. There are things to love and things to hate about the country but if i had to choose it would be "love it".

I love America: nowhere does it bigger, better, louder, faster, harder, flashier and brighter than the United States of America.

Yes, it is a country that has severe flaws and this can get up people's noses... But I found the pro's far outweighed the con's.. I love it so much! Wanna go back there so badly!!!

    It's so diverse it's unbelievable!

Three different time zones, multiple climates, beautiful landscapes, gritty reality, extreme poverty, extreme wealth, and more and more. The East is more in touch with Europe, the West has no idea and all in between is just country, but good country!

I remember my first time on the east coast, landing in JFK, walking out to a line of waiting yellow cabs, cruising through NYC city looking at all the buildings I had seen in movies and thinking 'my God - it is just like you would expect it to be': tooting horns, sirens, NYPD cruisers, steam coming up through vents from the subway, hot dog stands, diners, Italians, Chinese, Polish, Russians, Irish, Blacks, Blues, Trance, Rock, Country, and more!

How can one city be so dirty, so clean, so magnificent, so frightening, so fantastic and so devastating all at once? Great sense of community too!

It's its foriegn policy that I have a problem with. Nothing against the place itself as such. I doubt the average American rings up the whitehouse for a good old cackle about what evil they can get up to next. It's a such a vast, media saturated place theres enough going on there domestically to attract their attention.

Well america is just a gangbang of different nations from across the world, alot of thier cultures has alot to with the america that we all know.

If these people hadnt gone to america in search of a better life and the fact that columbus hadnt searched for the ''new world'' for the most part it would of been still been habited by Native americans

    1) We should all volunteer to protect America's borders from afar.

    http://www.texasborderwatch.com/

    2) As for the American foreign policy, I'm more concerned with what the Chinese are up to worldwide.

    3) The only American that I really know are my wife's relatives. I think that Jerry Springer could probably get three year's programming out of that shower of deadbeat weirdos.

you can't just love it or hate it, you may love or hate certain aspects or parts of america, but not overall as a country or society.

If you hate starbucks, it doesn't mean you hate ford cars. . . .

It's like asking do you love or hate Europe? Too broad a question.

That said tho my instinctive answer for the poll was 'hate'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,572 ✭✭✭✭brummytom

Been three times now - twice in the last 2 years; absolutely love the place.

I don't personally, like the Americanisation (e.g. that being spelt Americanization - just gets on my tits) of all Western cultures, but ahh well.. times change.

People always associate Americans with being rude for some reason.. I honestly don't know why, the Americans are, genuinely, the most polite people I've ever met. Everyone's incredibly friendly, it's a very welcoming place to tourists.

Its the best we have so I have to say I love it. Europe has been f*cked up since WW2 and so the only major alternative to the USA is now China, the human equivalent of an ants nest or The Borg.

Just back from America, and I can safely say I love it, but I could never ever live there. The Americans are ignorant of anything that happens outside their borders. Not to mention, their TV is a nightmare to watch.

Same here, and I think that's the right answer. There is no single "America" for you to love or hate. I've been to four different US cities (Seattle, New York, Denver, Houston), and had different good times in all of them. If I didn't turn on the TV I could believe I'd been to four different countries. (If you think "America" includes Canada, add three more countries: Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver).

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

A 30 minute show, for example Friends will have at a minimum 3 ad breaks. Also movie channels have ad breaks too. Its intolerable. Also their news channels are inane, fearmongering, overhyped and appeal to lowest common denominator.

You mean like exactly what Sky (a News Corp Company....) would do here if they could get away with it?
