So a new season of The Premier League kicks off this Thursday night from the O2 in London. Looking forward to this, think it's an extremely strong lineup this year and we are in for some cracking matches.

Here is Thursdays schedules with my picks in bold:
    Week One
    February 11 - The O2, London
Ronnie Baxter v Terry Jenkins Draw
Mervyn King v Adrian Lewis Draw
Raymond van Barneveld v James Wade
    Simon Whitlock v Phil Taylor

Hard to call the top four this year with Barney playing some poor stuff and both Whitlock and Lewis playing some great stuff. Can see Barney missing out on the top 4.

    Baxter 5 v 8 Jenkins
    King 8 v 4 Lewis
    Barney 7 v 7 Wade
    Whitlock 3 v 8 Taylor

Might as well do the prediction league.

    Baxter v Jenkins - Baxter
    King v Lewis - lewis
    Barney v Wade - wade
    Whitlock v Taylor - draw

have a feeling baxter could get some big wins this season, he has been through so much he just looks like he is enjoyin his darts.
whitlock will love the big crowds, if wade is bothered he can be up there in top 2 easily. but if lewis can keep his head he could be the biggest danger man - his averages in worlds and players championship was very impresseive!

Shall we do the same league we did last year? 2 points for correct result, 3 points for correct score?

    Ronnie Baxter 7-7 Terry Jenkins
    Mervyn King 8-6 Adrian Lewis
Raymond van Barneveld 7-7 James Wade
    Simon Whitlock 4-8 Phil Taylor

    Good idea heres mine

    Ronnie Baxter 4-8 Terry Jenkins
    Mervyn King 8-6 Adrian Lewis
Raymond van Barneveld 4-8 James Wade
    Simon Whitlock 8-3 Phil Taylor

Going for the big Whitlock win cos its being reported Taylor has a virus and may not even play. Big blow with the first round in the O2. I reckon he'll play but well under par.

Plenty of players have played while sick so Taylor should be no different. unless it's very bad he should play.

    yeah thats what I thought!

Sly sports said earlier he was in bed for 3 days, meaning no practice, tiredness, etc. He made excuses for players championship about "not enough practice" and he was off his best there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

I think if Whitlock played a bit better he could have beaten Taylor tonight. Taylor was far from convincing but he did show flashes of brilliance. Whitlock, i thought felt the pressure of thye big crowd, something that didn't seem to affect him during the WCs. Seemed to miss alot of big numbers etc.

Fair comment, Taylor wasn't vintage but looked like Whitlock was a small bit shakey with the beered up crown, no doubt he'll make the playoffs though...

Thought baxter was tasty enough last night, great to see him throwing confidently again, love to see him make the playoffs.
He's 50/1 with Powers for the title, thats not a bad each way bet, capable of a final place...

I have to say, the pre-match Sky sports hype-o-rama machine had me in stitches last night. The promo of Terry Jenkins where he turns and face the camera and some steam comes out of the "bulls" nostrils was hilarious.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,325 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

I was very dosappointed with last nights darts. Firstly the was far too big and not suited to darts at all. The sound was absolutely terrible with a huge echo throughout the night. The coverage was pretty awful as well with Sky Sports hype machine in overdrive.

As for the darts, Baxter looked very good and was unlucky to not get the win but fair play to Jenks for coming back. King was class, he is consistently averaging over 100 now which makes him a real threat.

Barney and Wade were both poor, especially Wade who was nowhere near his best. Barney a very lucky man if you ask me because he looked demoralised throughout.

What the hell happened to Whitlock? An 84 average is just poor darts no matter how you look at it. Taylor was understandably way off his game was there for the taking.

Pretty disappointing opening night if you ask me.

Balls to that then  Taylor wasn't near his best....but Whitlock was awful.

I don't think the size of the arena can be blamed for sly sports audio problems last night. Its the first night of this year's league, maybe need week or two to get bugs out of their equipment. A dodgy lead could have caused that last night, to be it sounded like it was clipping though. Basically meaning if it gets too loud the system will limit what goes through its amp's and out of the speakers, its like a self protection to stop the speakers blowing. Think thats why it sounded like it was cutting out and in at times.

I've been to a concert in the O2 about year & half back, sat right at the very back/top and couldn't believe how good the sound was. Everything was as clear as a bell.

Back to Sly sports/PDC cheesey coverage. WTF's going on with Whitlock's entrance? I imagined his family all sitting around the local pub, pint of fosters in hand with all their mates and people supporting the local hero.....and then he walks out with the cast of "Wizard of Oz" with its theme tune playing  I could imagine the pride draining from their faces to be overtaken with complete humilation and everyone in the pub laughing at them.

It seemed like that idea came straight out of Page 1 of the WWF's book of stereotypical/cheesey entrances :D

Yeah it really was laughable that, and add in the ridiculous trumpet players for Taylors entrance as well. Surely Whitlock must have been cringing walking on with those tossers, maybe that's why he was so poor last night.

Sky really went overboard last night and made a mockery of the night.

They seem to be trying to make a bit of a pantomine of the league nights. John part walk out with a lightsaber another moment to cringe in the past.

Surely its the PDC rather than sky who have a say in entrances

Whitlock was supposed to be jetlagged after flying in from Oz. John Part had similar problems travelling over and back for the Premierleague., Although I assume Whitlock will just stay in England for the duration of the comp.

One of the commentators said that will be staying on the Isle of Wight for the rest of the comp. I thought he was moving over to England to play the Tour full-time but it sounds like he is only over for the Premier League.

Well said, there was nothing wrong with the way they used to do it, why change something thats not broken...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,984 ✭✭✭Degag

If they want exuberant entrances they should just use pyro. Way more effective. Bolt of lightening hits the the stage for Taylors entrance etc.:P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭whaaames

And what? Mervyn king been carried onto the stage on a throne like prince Naseem Hamed ha

Not sure the sight of Mervyn king in leopard skin trunks is one I'd want to see

    Ha, imagine it..

But it is cringe worthy stuff, like when did darts become a pantomime just because its on every week, the tv majors have none of that carry on at all and they're just as enjoyable...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭Roadend

Sure what about the dancers on stage, it reminds me of that whole simpsons bit "Its the I didn't do it dancers"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭whaaames

The walk on girls are a lot nicer than they used to be, that Nicola Cowell one is lovely,..

i just reckon it'd be more enjoyable if they cut out the theatrics and got on with the darts a small bit more...
