Radio for running

Does anybody use a radio while running?

I've tried a cheapo portable radio and I've tried the radio on my phone, but the reception was not very good on either one. They were sometimes ok running in one direction but would lose reception when running in the other direction.

I'm just wondering if it is likely that the reception would be any better if I were to spend a bit on a decent quality radio, or is it just that the signal is weak in my area. Does anyone have any experience of improved reception from a better quality product? If so, any recommendations?

I bought a Sony with AM and FM about 5yrs ago and it's still going strong, think it cost about €75 in Dixons. It's digital, has a signal boost and the headphones act as an extension to the aerial and it fits in a small arm wallet. Reception is great, I listen to 5Live on 909 quite a bit and FM is pretty solid with the odd hiss which I can live with. Can't find it online, but I'm sure if you ask for one that contains the above it should be fine.

I've taken to using my phone for the radio these past few runs. Initially I was using my old headphones which I knew to be crap but it wasn't until I got new headphones that I realised just how bad the old ones were. I used to have the effect of losing reception but in reality it was the headphones and not the reception at all.
I got the new pair (Sony) in argos for €28 and so far so good.
So, be sure the issue isn't with your headphones first before you go out and buy a new (Possibly unneccesary) radio!

The headphones are the aerial in any of those little radios or phones. Changing the position that you have the headphone cable go around you, or not having it extended fully will make a difference to the reception. If it's only working when your running one direction doen the road but not the other, then you are probably blocking the signal with your body.
