Actually changed clubs was in Williamstown which is the municipal course here in Waterford but joined Mountain View in Ballyhale in Co.Kilkenny which is only 15 miles from Waterford and are doing a deal where you pay €150 for membership (full GUI) and €10 per game after that its a short course but well maintained and you dont feel the pinch of forking out big membership fees just after Christmas.

Invoice was due at the beinging at Jan but not going to pay for it. I have every intention of joining a new club around the wicklow area!
Just moved to Glenealy,Co.Wicklow, couple of weeks ago!

Have been sniffing around the clubs nearby, already played Arklow golf club, woodenbridge(so far the best),seafield g.c and Blainroe G.C. going to check out Glen of the down, wicklow g.c and Macreddin before i can make up my mind!!!:):):):)

Not trying to force you one way or another, but Wicklow is the closest to you, and they have made membership open at 3k year one and 1k each year there after.

Another one thats not too far from you is Coollattin.

Going to give up one of my memberships back home, keep the other and my Uni membership. Three is far too much.

Are you the richest student in history? Membership of one club is enough.............

I was the same, and no, you dont need to be rich. By "back home" he most likely means somewhere rural where prices are low, and junior prices are almost nominal.

I was paying 80 quid a year for membership of a very good club, and that was during the boom!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭carnsoreboxer

Oh silly me you can add another no to the poll. Hubbie and I had membership down the country, I never really got great use out of it due to club commitments in Dublin but last year only played course once - expensive round of golf, so no haven't re-joined nor will we be it works out by paying green fees and opens we will be better off in long run!

    Cheers Sheet.

Im far from rich, and no, one club isn't enough because I go to college in Dublin and am from limerick. I don't go home at weekends, so yes, I need a club up here.

Yup, membership of my place in at home is not a huge amount and the club is probably going bust so I don't consider it necessary to hold on to it. the other is an nice club that I hope to go back to and play for.

I'm fairly sure a printout from Golfnet would surfice as a cert?

Going slightly off topic, did your old club do anything to try keep you as a member?

Just to tell my story of changing clubs last year. Walked into the managers office with paperwork/ bank details filled out. He got me to log on to golfnet and printed of my details. He then set up my new gui card and handed it over on the spot and said your good to go. Happy days.:P

To be honest no. I never mentioned I was joining another club or made a big deal out of it just said I wouldnt be renewing my membership and could I have my hanicap cert please.

Maybe she thought by getting aggresive on the phone I would be too scared to leave!

Just got my letter of acceptance to Bray. It's only 5 minutes from where I live and will be the first time that I join a club after 20 years of society golf. (Never even had a gui handicap)

    Can't wait!

(now, just need to figure out where I am going to get the cash!)

You'll enjoy that. It's a good track and a very nice club to be in. The members are great. Best of luck with it.

Rejoined my old club this year. I was a junior and intermediate member but couldn't afford the hello money when I finished college so I left. This year the hello money was reduced SUBSTANTIALLY for former intermediates and I rejoined looking forward to competitive golf again soon. This recession is good for something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭madds

Have this week off (we've a 4-day old daughter in the house) so will be paying my sub sometime this week. Think it's a grand approx.

Congrats Madds, best to hold off on paying the subs and just stick the clubs on adverts. It all changes!

Thanks F22. This is actually our 3rd (2 boys already) and so far so good with the latest addition as she is sleeping soundly like all babies should! Might get out for a cheeky 12 holes on Wednesday if she keeps this up!

That's a disgrace that you were forced to pay hello money after being a Junior/Student member. That club now would want to go and take a hike:(
My club has the 5 year rule so to speak. If you're a junior and/or student member for 5 years or more then there is no hello money required to upgrade to full member

Past Captain so will stick with current club

What you have there Ronaldo is a progressive club who realise that the value of a strong junior club is a constant stream of new adult members. Unfortunately not all clubs currently share this view. In my experience, limited though it is, newer clubs seem to regard juniors as a nuisance while older more established clubs are more likely to have a good attitude and less restrictive path to full membership for juniors.

Moving membership this year, last club was a far better links course and €100 cheaper but was too far away to make membership worthwhile. New course is 15 minutes away, a poorer parkland (rubbish drainage) but should get more golf played. (thank god:D)

They brought it in at my club about 5 years ago.
Any student member had to pay 500 euro hello money irrespective of length of membership.
Needless to say ,it was an absolute disaster and was scrapped after a year.

Need to double back on this one - issues i had with my club are still there so i'm changing clubs with immediate effect. Have got an offer with another club i couldn't refuse and i know a lot of memebers there. Lot harder to play so plenty of practice needed.

Now to see what old club are going to say!

About to move from Cork to Wicklow (new job in Dublin). Old club was a 45 minute drive. Probably a dozen clubs in the locality, so looking forward to trying some of them out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 314 ✭✭Alzar

Not rejoining this year due to injury sustained last September. Will hardly get to play this year at all :(:(
Membership will be held for me, medical exemption or something like that. Don't think it matters that much as the "hello" money is finished with.

moved out to Dunmore East in Co.waterford. excellent rates and they tailored a payment option for me, played here first six years ago came back last october and was astounded with the changes/improvements. I brought three members from our old club with me:D a lot of good value offers around the country at the mo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭ShriekingSheet

Roughly speaking, the above 82% of people keeping membership is pretty awesome given the situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Screed

Moved club as I got sick of driving 30mins to play and I play 3 times a week. Applied for one club 10 mins from me. I was accepted. Another club I spoke with offered a similar deal and its only 5 mins away so I joined it. Told old club I was thinking of moving and was taken off the handicap list within 2 days.
