Hi! Im a 17 year old leaving cert student who wants to dabble in home recording, just so i can say i know a small bit. Anywho, i have 4-channel powermixer, my own instruments, and the use of a family pc. Is there anything else that is absolutely necessary? And does anyone know where i could download free audio editing and mixing software? Thanks.

The second sticky, labelled "Resources", has links to lots of free stuff. You should find what you need in there.

I think x music had free demo versions of ableton live a few weeks ago.. I think that might be a good place to start... That with a few youtube tutorials might get you started.. Good luck:)

You're going to need a soundcard or audio interface to be able to get audio and midi in and out of the computer.

Reaper is'nt free, but I think you can use it for three months free of charge and if you like it, you can buy for $60 (bout E44). Haven't used it but i've heard good things.
