Suggestions wanted for a BIG tv

I have a 46 inch Samsung tv but its not mpeg4 (I have freesat not sky, so I have an aerial for the terrestrial channels but while I can get sound and epg, I can't get the dtt picture) and it is not big enough for my sitting room (26ft x 16ft).

I was thinking about getting a new tv at least 56 inches or bigger (the better:D), full hd, mpeg4 etc. However there doesn't appear to be many tvs that tick all these boxes. The debate about lcd v plasma v led v 3D tv is also confusing.

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you want one of these: Panasonic TX-P65V10

    http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/Products/VIERA+Flat+Screen+Televisions/NeoPDP+TVs/TX-P65V10/Overview/2799081/index.html

65", built in freesat receiver with MPEG4 decoder allowing you to view HD satellite channels - not that there are very many at the moment.

They are not entirely Irish DTT compliant but the worst case scenario is that you might need a box if, DTT ever becomes a reality, and that would be hooked to a set giving one of the highest quality pictures available in any set at the moment.

Might not even need the box, but that is a long story covered in another thread.

We have got very few sources of full HD content, I wouldn't worry about 3D. Plasmas give the best image quality of large screen sets, usually at a lower price.

Dave, sounds like you want a projector, won't get a bigger screen than that. :D Oh,and some device to get DTT.

Isn't the problem with projectors that the deepest black is determined by how dark the room is?

The panny looks the buisness. My only doubt would be the lack of a mpeg4 tuner for Irish dtt.

I wouldn't be keen on projectors for day to day viewing of tv, playing ps3 games etc.

I managed to store the DTT channels on my 50" Panny when RTE were transmitting an amenable service type flag. There is no problem with the MPEG4 decoder being able to decode Irish DTT, it's a bug that prevents the Panny from saving the channels if it doesn't recognise the service type flag during a scan.

I took the punt that since we watch satellite mostly, having the sat and TV controls on the one remote was going to be more convenient than having DTT and TV on the same remote and the sat via a box and separate remote.

At the moment, we have all three on the one remote.

Where did you buy your Panny? I normally buy over the net but would doubt that a tv of the size quoted above would be delivered to Ireland without a massive shopping cost.

mods, remove if this is against forum rules.

ProsperousDave, i work in alliance electric and we stock the 58" and 65" Panasonic V10s. http://allianceelectric.ie/test/catalog/index.php?cPath=1_97&sort=4a&filter_id=6

price wise, they're very competitive even compared to UK retailers

Where did you buy your Panny? I normally buy over the net but would doubt that a tv of the size quoted above would be delivered to Ireland without a massive shopping cost.

Bought it from a brilliant UK based seller on eBay. I spent close to six weeks hunting it down and trying umpteen retailers here, up north, the UK and France before finding someone who would ship a Plasma TV and had one in stock. The new models were coming in and many sellers didn't have them. Pixmania sold me one on eBay, then said they didn't have it, and would I like the L model which they reckoned would be better suited to Ireland anyway - Grrrrrr. Got a full refund out of them after a week or so.

Shipping was about £119, which was very reasonable and included insurance. I had quotes of over £300 and that was just to Dublin and no further.

I saved €700 or so over a quote from a local Panasonic shop.

It was very well l packed - being on it's own pallet, strapped upright and then entombed in sticky black plastic like they use to wrap bales, thus further securing it and making it waterproof.

The seller was entertainmentxclusive. To give you an idea, they have the TX-P50G10 for £949. Would be worth sending an email to see if they would get in a larger one and ship it.

    I dealt with Lizzie - lizzie@entertainmentxclusive.co.uk

To say she was both extremely helpful and pleasant to deal with would be an understatement. phone: 0871-990 3440, 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

if you buy the V10E that has a MPEG4 tuner in it I tested it and it picked up the RTE test transmissions

Well if money isn't an option you could always consider a Panasonic

    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/01/ces-2008-keynot/

And if that wont do you B&O have a modest screen(one of the most amazing screens I have ever seen, If only I wont the lotto)

On a serious note, panasonic 65'' G10 would be worth considering, I have the 50" and find it to be just the right size for my room.

Sharp as a tac big_moe! It is the v10, is there many other brands that offer tv's of that size. would you consider a 50" and get a Pioneer KRP-500A?

i've only ever seen a handfull of companies with tvs larger than 60". but at that size you really do need a good quality one. the panasonic is unreal, picture for a screen that size is unreal!

jaysus F.Galway, you'd be doing very well to find a new KRP-500A!! we havent had them in nearly 6 months! i'd put money on saying that you wouldn't find one new anywhere
