NCT queries True or False

Hey people,
I have a few questions concerning the NCT. I had a look in this forum but couldn't find this subject already so apologies if I'm covering old ground.

Here goes...
~ When your car passes the NCT you're covered for 2 years/24 months:
True or False?

~ If your car is over 10 years old you only get covered for 1 year/12 months: True or False?

~ If your car was originally taxed originally in January (whatever the year) and and when you get the NCT done in, say, July, would this affect your NCT cover time. Say, you instead of 24 months you would get covered for 18 months. (24 months - less jan to july, 5 months = 18 months)
True or False?

Please don't think I am a complete dimwit for asking such questions, but this is what a few people have been saying:)

Please don't think I am a complete dimwit for asking such questions, but this is what a few people have been saying:)

1- Falce - the car is coverd until the expiroy date only. If you nct it on time then you are covered for 2 years.
2- I don't know - i would doubt it though
3- see point 1

2) False at the mo, will be true from sometime in 2011 I believe

Ok, so expiry date is out 2 years after it has been taxed originally, so if it was January originally it will always be January. So if you don't get it NCT-ed til July you only get it to the January.

1. When your car passes it's NCT your new cert will run for two years from the date of expiry on your previous test, ie if your cert expired 06-09 and say you tested it today (Feb) and passed, it would only run until 06-11. Your car can be tested three months prior to your cert expiring also.

2. This is coming into affect from 2011.

3. The tax disc on your car has nothing to do with your NCT, they don't check your tax.

I meant the tax book, you know the date the car was bought new.
This helps, my explanation was very inadequate, but that is actually what I meant. (Can you tell I'm a girl?!)

Thats what I meant!:D But also, I assumed when you register your new car you gotta have it taxed, and that's where I thought it all meant the same. How wrong was I!:o

Close enough, you have to have it taxed so you can drive, but if your car is gonna be sitting in your garden for say 6 months, you can declare it off the road and have a Garda verify this by signing a form and then tax it when you wish to drive it again

I know some, a few years ago when they did not bother to enforce the NCT much and he was 18 months late doing the NCT, and the kind lady one phone mention that it would only be valid for a few months before he would have to do it again, but if he would wait till the next one was due before taking it, I/he would only have to do it the once....

I bet the kind lady on the phone would be no help if he got caught with no NCT

This was way back when there were no points for no NCT, he got stopped once with the year old nct and a month old tax disk, the Garda looked at both and only mentioned the tax disc.

No, not a dimwit, these are valid questions.
I know for sure, the answer to your last point-basically, is the nct backdated to when it should have been tested? the answer is yes..i did my nct last may when the big fuss happened re Gardai and big fines for no nct. Mine was out by 8 months, and sure enough it was back dated to that time-i.e. i only got 16 months nct cover.

As for the 2 year nct for cars over 10 years...there was a very good post on here a few weeks ago, telling of the change in legislation about to be signed off. Which states the issue you spoke about-10 year old cars, 1 year nct. Thankfully, it isnt in action yet, so if you happen to have an nct test on your 98 in two weeks, you should get a 2 year cert.
