Moving abroad - alone

Can't get a job here and thinking of my options in terms of moving somewhere. Just if i was to do it it'd have to be by myself. Really can't imagine how i'd be comfortable with that. Has anyone actually done something like this by themselves? or would you?

moving to a country where you have no friends and no family, and a chance of no job just is really daunting to me. I don't know how people would find it easy... :(

I plan to in 2-3 years, to Ireland. Not worried about it at all

I plan on doing it when I get out of college, probably head off to England.

I was almost set up to head off to Canada before I got my place in college, had a visa paid for and all.

That will be tough, what with you not knowing anyone. :D

    Brian Cowen would love this.

My brother moved to Shaghai on his own two weeks ago, he loves the place so he does. It's probably better to go on your own, you're forced to make friends and get by and it builds character.

I'm in dorchester in the Uk all by my lonesome. Get the internet in and a decent tv and you'll be fine

I thought you were already over here...?

Anyway, I did. Three times. I'd advise staying within Europe (easier to get home: 60€ and a Ryanair flight will do it in three hours or so) and finding message boards for expats in your intended city. Make aquaintances before you go and get tips of what to do once you're there and how much money you'll need.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I moved to London alone in 1989 to do a course. The only reason I had gone there was because my aunt lived there and I knew I had her as "back-up" if there was problems - though she was in Greenwich and I was in Harlesden which are very far apart.
As it happens, I made friends very quickly and in 5 years only visited my aunt a few times.

I'd imagine he'd prefer if the people who were rushing to leave the country weren't the ones with the (various combination of ) intelligence, money, experience, qualifications, courage, imagination, drive and ambition to actually be able to do so.

when i'm in college i'll be spending a year studying and working in france, then one summer working in spain, whichever i like and find the best i'll be moving there. at that stage i won't have to worry about a language barrier. can't wait for it to be honest.

I've done it before and I'm planning on moving to Latin America in a few months. I think I might join a football team wherever I end up, I'd say it'd be a great way to make friends, if nothing else :)

Sometimes we have to leave our comfort zone to shake things up- as Mark Twain said, when you're on your death bed, it will be the things that you didn't do that you'll regret, not the things you did do.

No, I meant Cowen would love to be moving somewhere.

Ah! I doubt it tho. There's very few job out there where you can get €257k p/a despite being completely incompetent.

Moved to the UK a few years back...knew no one. Got myself a nice place decent job. At the start used to fly back alot (can always get cheap flights) but I find myself doing that less and less now. Have a great bunch of mates here and I stay in touch with people back home and they come visit from time to time.

OP, I'm going to link you to this old R&R thread. I'm not using it to get at you (as that thread title suggests!), I just feel there's a lot of good points in it to help you feel more confident about going it alone.

He'd love it even more if it happened 430,000 times. His prayers would be answered.

Granny one of Londons old school? Hard as, one of the boys, wouldn't like to meet her down a dark alley, rough ya up and stab you in the eyeballs.
