Driving test problem...

    Hey,

I've got my driving test coming up in about a months time and I've got no car to take the test in. I've been taking lessons and I've come a good way. Just need a bit more practice with stuff like reversing round the corner, hillstart, 3 point turn and a bit of observation. But the rest I'm pretty much perfect with. So hopefully with a bit of practice I should be good enough by the time the test comes to pass it.

Now my problem is I've got no car to take the test in and I'm also a bit stripped for cash right now to be able to buy one. So far I've been taking all the lessons in my instructors car.

Now maybe I could try to gather up just about enough cash to get myself a cheap banger to do my test in (I could probably gather around 1-1.5k eur if that can get my anything good + temporary insurance). But I was wondering if there was a way I could get a car for a day to do my test in. This way I could maybe instead buy a computer with the cash I've got saved up (something I sorta need too) and then over the summer get a job and get a good car.

So guys, any help/advice will be much appreciated!!

Generally instructors will rent out their car for a test. Usually costs 120~ or there abouts. It doesn't make sense just buyin a car for the test.

Alan is right. Put it off until you pass your test. Your gonna be used to his car anyway so ask him if its possible. There shouldnt be a problem but make sure you get a pre-test lesson before the test. Its usually included in the cost of the car. As for insurance and stuff on the day its all included too and the full licence holder will be the tester in the car with you.

    Good luck!!!

    Thanks for the advice guys.

I was also wondering if I could manage to buy a car before the test (to practice in it and then after I pass my test drive it), could I get insurance for like a week for it?

I could maybe manage to buy a car or maybe borrow my sis's car but I won't be able to afford the learner insurance on it. So if I could like get insurance for just a week, I could practice around in it before my test and then do my test in it. Once I've passed the test and got the full license, I should be able to afford the cheaper insurance...

    Am I missing something obvious?
Why can't you get yourself put as a named driver on your sister's car and use it for the test?

Cuz the insurance right now is a bit too pricey for me as I'm only provisional and if in case I fail the test, I wouldn't wanna be insured on her car for the rest of the year cuz she doesn't really let me drive it much. She's not gonna get me insured until I get full license. So a temporary week long insurance could be a good alternative. I'ld just like a car to practice on before my test so that I can nail down my parking, reversing round corner, 3 point turn and stuff like that, as these are pretty much the only skills i've got a problem with (I reckon I just need more practice!). And also have a car to do my test in...

Then, could you not just get a week's insurance on her car :O

Seems a bit much to buy a car jsut for the test

Thats what I was asking... Could I get insurance for just a week... or to put it another way if you know any insurance company that could cover you for just the week...

Unless your sister's policy ends in the next couple of weeks, i doubt she is going to change insurer. Best bet would be to ring whatever insurance company your sister is with and ask.

I realise I am older than you and of the girly persuasion, but for me to be put as a learner on my mother's insurance for the year was just €38.10.

What sort of prices are you being quoted?

Yeh man, renting your driving instructors car is the best way to go, that's what I'll be doing.

I looked around on the internet and it was quoting me around a grand extra to add to my sis's car.
My friend drives an 03 Yaris on a provisional. He says he's the 3rd driver on the car and is paying around 600eur for the insurance.

So my sis (and myself too) really wouldn't be happy paying around 600eur to add me onto her car (something I rarely would be driving so it would be quite a waste putting in all that money). She's got an 06 Megane Convertible which has a 1.4l engine I think so its not a cheap car to insure.
    I'm 22 btw...

It was €330 to put me on my mother's insurance as a named driver as a 23 year old female, if that helps. A 1.0L Hyundai Getz.

I think you need to ring your sister's insurer directly to ask how much it would be to add you as a named driver - are you sure you're not getting quotes for policies in your own name?

Thanks, yeah, i'll get my sis to ring and see how much they're quoting for me.
Though lately most probably I feel I'm just gonna end up doing the test in my instructors car (Still gotta speak to him about it though) cuz lately my sis has been living in Limerick so I rarely would get to use her car...
