Every year Permanent TSB give out a free motoring magazine and this week I got the 2010 copy. I suppose they do it to promote their car loans etc.

It is nice to get a free magazine, the pictures are good and its nice to see current pricing etc. But really who writes this stuff? I started laughing out loud when I read some of the reviews! What do you guys think of these 'for' and 'against' comments on some cars:

    • The 'against' comment on the Alfa Mito was that it is 'little known'! How exactly does that make it a bad car?
    • Bmw 1 Series Convertible against comment is 'hates bad weather'! Really, I thought you could drive it in rain with the roof down.
    • Chrysler Sebring 'for' comment is 'nice cabrio'. I don't think so. And seemingly it musn't mind bad weather, like the BMW.
    • Honda Accord 'for' comment is 'all change' and 'against' comment is 'previous Accord name'. I don't see either of those comment being positive or negative.
    • Lexus LS600h against comment is 'only wishful thinking'. In whos opinion? Is the writer deciding what people can and cannot afford aswell?
    • Mazda MX5 'against' comment is 'not for the family'. Whoa what a genius. If I never read this magazine I would have tried putting the kids on the boot.
    • Mitsubishi Grandis 'for' comment is 'Grandiose style and comfort' and against comment is 'too grandiose'.
I could quote lots more howlers like this but I could be typing for ages. If this writer actually getting paid to write this stuff? I could actually write it better myself. He is also treating the reader as being completely and utterly stupid. And he is not giving the consumer any useful information in deciding on their next car.

However is a good magazine for a laugh I suppose :D

Dont take things so serious. I think it was safe enough for the writer to assume that 99.9% of the readers wouldnt be buying a new LS600h.
    Accord comment is silly though

I thought the same actually. The editor has a lot to answer for. You could actually nearly take the oppisit of what the trainee writer is saying.
    Bad written press. Very poor.

Yeah get a good laugh out of that magazine every year - the standard of editing is terrible - usually there is at least one car with the wrong description attached... the pricing etc. is usually way off too.

What amazes me is that whilst they give it away free in the bank, they also try to sell that drivel in newsagents... God help anyone who wastes their cash on that rubbish - it's glossy so it won't even make a god firelighter!!

I usually flick through it to see are new models available etc. Rarely even bother to read the descriptions. Bank with them so get it for free!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Haven't read this years one, but have read several previous editions and they weren't too bad from what I remember. This years one seems to be pretty bad though judging from the OPs quotes

It's muck, and the glossy paper doesn't even burn properly.

No they aren't, they're offering traditional motor loans too.

Ok now here are some comment from the 2011 Auto Ireland Permanent TSB magazine.
According to the writer of the magazine the 'against' comments or the drawbacks with the following cars are as follows:

    Fiat Punto: ''Punto name''
Honda Accord: ''old name should be dropped''
Kia C'eed: ''off putting model name''
    Jeep Compass: ''another corny name''
    Jeep Patriot: ''model name''
    Skoda Superb: ''cheeky name''
Toyota Avensis: ''model name too old''
    Volkswagen Touareg: ''ridiculous model name''

So it seems the writer is advising against spending tens of thousands on any of the above care due to their model names. Is he for real? And Permanent TSB put their brand on this level of crap. He basically gives no advice on any realistic drawbacks with the above cars.
