Town requirments for a garda

Just wondering what requirements a town needs to have a full time garda.

We used to have more than one in our village but now even as the population has risen we have one for only a few hours a day. There are more and more public disorders in the town. It's 10 to 15 minutes before someone arrives from a neighbouring town and most of the time these scumbags have people looking out for them and just text each other and things are over by the time the garda arrive at the scene.

The most common time I see a garda in the town is when they clear the pubs passing through which annoys the hell out a lot of the local people as its appearing more and more that they are never around when you need them but show up when the people who cause no trouble are having a good time.

Theres no such thing as requirements.

It just depends on the volume of crime/resource needed, and tbh, you will never see a 24 hour station there again! It takes alot of officers for it to become economical to open 24 hours. Last week the garda inspectorate recommended having most garda stations closed to the public at night altogether.

At the moment there is probably cover till about 1 every night maybe!? Later on friday and saturdays, and then someone uin again at about 8 every morning, with resources streched to the limit already i wouldnt hold hope for getting more gardai either!

And tbh, the law is the law, if its after closing time it doesnt matter if the people are having a good time or not, cant just police the people you want!

Sadly they do seem to police the people they want down here at times. I have had nothing but negative experiences at the hand of the garda in the past while. There is a garda on duty for 3 hours a day. I am not sure what these 3 hours are tbh.

Letter to the superintendent outlining your issues.

Forgive me for sounding a smart ass but has it occured to you that perhaps the pubs are at least partially responsible for the public disorder ? By clearing the pubs the Gardai may be preventing over-drinking and the all-too-common trouble that brings.

Nope, most of these offences are carried out by the same group that rarely go into the local pubs. Also a lot of the issues and offence take place before 11pm.

Cheers for the links. I am going to write a letter to a few people about the lack of police presence in the town and if it can be increased. I'll start local and work up.

In the current climate you might as well be writing to santa! you'll be lucky to hold onto the 15 minutes response time.

Becarefull. You might get what you wish for! AGS dont just inforce the laws you want them to, but have to inforce all the laws ;)

The job they do is one i could not. I would lose all hope for this country if I had to see, day in day out what they see, AGS are the ones who see and put up with the stuff, the rest of us would never want to see. In a way they protect us from having to see this.

I am not a member of AGS. Its a hard job with few rewards, damed if you do and damed if you dont. Less rewards if the government keep taking away pensions and wages.

Dont get me wrong. I have had run ins with AGS. Im still angry over the way things went. But like everything else in life, their are some good and, some bad in all walks of life. Still maybe the job alone has changed members of AGS into what they are. Hardened to what life can be. And these men and women have to see it all. If they didnt harden up to what life has to show them, Id say they would fall apart :(
