World T20 Qualifiers

How do people think Ireland will get on in the T20 qualifiers?

The batting appears to have been good in the quadrangular tournament but the bowling left a lot to be desired. Boyd Rankin is a huge loss for the team, he is a brilliant death bowler. Seems like they are very reliant on Johnston and Botha to perform with the ball.

I like the idea of having Stirling at the top with O'Brien, like they did against Sri Lanka A...the two of them score very quickly and get the innings off to a flyer. Would Porterfield make a good no. 3 though?

I'm concerned, to be honest. We're definitely an opening bowler short, especially without Rankin. To compensate, we've got Andre Botha back, and George Dockrell looks like he could, with time, fill Kyle McCallan's role, but our bowling is distinctly vunerable.

The batting is going well, although I'm not convinced by either of our recent opening partnerships. I think we should stick with Porterfield & NO'B for the moment, as I think Stirling does a good job at 3.

What we need to stop doing is losing wickets in pairs, particularly at the top of the order. Too often we're left with 2 new batsmen at the crease, with the consequent re-building costing us momentum.

We should qualify, but it's going to be more of a struggle than previously. Best of luck to all the guys in Dubai, we'll be following anxiously from here!

I agree...it has happened in every match. Hopefully that will start to disappear with more game time.

Stirling has done a great job at no. 3 alright...but he'd be our best at exploiting the fielding restrictions. He will no doubt bat at 3 though.

I think the team have definitely received awake up call. Losing to Afghanistan, while they are undoubtedly a great team, was unexpected. This on top of losing to Canada will hopefully spur them on to perform well in the qualifiers.

A good win today, or at least a win is a win! Roll on Tuesday.

A bad loss today to Afghanistan. We let them get 139, through a combination of bad fielding and dropped catches, then lost wickets far too regularly leaving, TJ and John Mooney looking at too big a task at the end.

We seriously need one of the top order to follow through on this, too often we're leaving the lower order to get the bulk of the runs.

The only saving grace is that Scotland lost to the USA, meaning that beating the USA will allow us to retain second place in the group. We hope.

It was a poor result, things need to change and change fast. With the USA beating Scotland, who on paper would've been Ireland's biggest threat heading into the tournament, nothing is a given in this group. Porterfield has got the starts bur needs to kick on and convert them into big scores.

We may not be able to afford another loss in the tournament. Obviously wins against Scotland and USA get us to Super Fours, but we will start that 2 points behind the Afghans. Best hope then is for the two teams coming out of the other group to have a defeat apiece, and then beat them both.

They really did seem to be architects of their own downfall today - still best of luck, that's arguably the toughest match over with.

Poor result alright, USA beating scotland was a shock also.
If ourselves and scotland win our next matches then the 3rd games will be straight knock out. One of us definelty wont make it this time round.
Even though it's only 20/20 it would be a big setback for us :(

Well if Afghans lost to Scotland and USA we wouldn't be down 2 as as it would be USA that would get through ;) meaning we'd carry forward the 2 points :D from beating them...all assumptions of course :pac:

Can't see that IMO, I've been a fan of the Afgan team since they beat Jersey (I think) in a qualifier many moons ago. We don't seem to have the ability/confidence to take on sub-continent teams and beat them (Bangl, Sri Lanka A, Afganastan etc.) but if we play to our potential then we should beat both USA and Scotland. If we don't then we don't deserve to progress which would be a great shame.

Even bigger to miss out on another Short trip to the west indies....damn this recession!!!!! ;)

USA finish on 124-6. So a good win for Ireland. Hopefully get them right back on track

If Afganastan beat the scots we'd be almost sure of second barring a heavy defeat against the scots................due to the big win today right??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,729 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Afganastan beat the scots so going into final match

    Afganastan 2 wins
    ireland/usa 1 win
    Scotland 0 wins

Can't see Afganastan not being motivated against the USA ;)

Should qualify now and will need to beat both teams from the other group.
Looking like 2 from UAE/Kenya and Holland, idealy would hope the Afgans beat them also just to be sure :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,729 ✭✭✭Speak Now

No shock as Afghanistan beat USA by 29 runs to top group.

Ireland currently playings scotland which barring a heavy defeat we qualify anyway. Yikes 65/4 off 9 overs

UAE have topped the other group so that's a game we absolutley must win tomorrow to get them on 1 defeat in Super 4's. (USA beat UAE in warm up game )
Looking like The Netherlands will beat kenya so they'll be the 4th team.
here's hoping Afghans can beat them as well :D

Qualifying in runner spot is probbaly better than winning it.

Much rather be grouped with Windies and England than S.A and India ;)

    Ireland scored 136-7.

Hard to work out the run rate but i think scotland will need to to hit 137 in 14 overs with possibly a ball or 2 more. So almost 10 an over which is in this game is not impossible i guess. A good start should put any nerves to bed  hopefully a few early wickets will push run rate well into double figures :pac:

14.5 overs - if we get to the 15th over, we're there

Great start - Scotland 6/2 off 5 balls!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭barrera

Scots 40/5 at end of 8th over.

Presuming nothing bizarre happens over the next little while, in Super 4s, our fate is not entirely in our own hands - we have to win against UAE and Netherlands. Puts us on 3 wins. If UAE beat Afghans, and Afghans beat Dutch, that's three teams on 3 wins, and we're down to NRR.

So we'll be shouting on Ireland and Afghanistan for next two days to keep things simple.

Scots 72-5 off 12 overs now.Coetzer seems to be single handedly keeping them in with a chance.

    Well hexed :D

Good win in the end. Some performance from Connell and Johnston with the ball again.

So we have have to beat Holland and the UAE?, and that should be good enough for us to get through,

our NRR is higher than any of the other three teams by a good bit,

so UAE tomorrow, it's a big one :D...

No our NRR is inferior to UAE and Afghan
It's only teams in the super 4 that count now.

    Sorry about that,

let's hope for two more good wins that will get us through...

    Netherlands have beaten Afghanistan.

As it happens, we now are in control of our own destiny - two wins and we make it to the West Indies, without worrying about NRRs.

You're right :) that was a good result today after all.

If we can beat the UAE today then last 2 matches are like finals for all 4 teams.

NRR would still decide who tops the group though (or is it head to head ) and as i said earlier i'd rather come second and get England and Windies. More appealing than S.A and India IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭barrera

The top two teams play each other again in a final to determine who comes 1st and who comes 2nd, so NRR from the super 4s is discounted.

While 2nd place gives the handier group, you can't really see any team doing anything other than playing to win the final.

You're right i assumed they only went by group standings as it's finished tomorrow. We're the second match tomorrow so if they do make the final it's straight out again so possibly a slight disadvantage.

It's not even for the handier group i want second, it's just England and Windies games in the 80's is when i first started following cricket and i think they'd be the glamour ties even though other sides are probably better currently.

NRR doesnt matter to us anymore. Last round of games the 2 winners take all. assuming we dont get washed out (pretty unlikely ;) )

Nowhere unfortunately, following the commentary on cricketeurope4.net:D

Into the last over UAE need 23 for the win.

    Edit: All over

Netherlands won't be easy but hopefully we can ensure qualification tomorrow.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,879 ✭✭✭D3PO

    as it stands

    Super Four

    1. Ireland NRR + 0.225 2 pts
    2. Afganistan NRR +0.031 2 pts
    3. Holland NRR 0.000 2 pts
    4. UAE NRR -0.226 2 pts

So its winners take all in the next round of games

Or an Irish washout puts us through aswell
