ok so about a week ago my focus started making this kind of worrying sound from the rear wheels. its like something is grinding. now ive checked both tyres and they're both ok, both inflated appropriately.

would it be possible that its something to do with the drum brakes?? could they be worn down so much that theyre having an affect.

im kinda clueless when it comes to that kinda stuff so im only basing it on my own theories. just wondering if anyone can shine some light on it. hopefully will be able to find a mechanic whos open on a saturday or else im stuck with it till next friday :(

any help would be greatly appreciated

Does the sound rise in pitch as you go faster?

The MK1 Focus had an issue where moisture got into the rear bearings, causing a grinding noise, and a vibration from the rear. If the car has ABS, it may also cause the ABS light to flash on and off.

The only remedy is to replace the bearings and the spindle carrier.

The issue Drummerboy mentioned happened to my mk 1 Focus Saloon. Have a look at the rear wheels and see whether there is any rust around the wheel nuts, this can be a dangerous issue and I'd strongly recommend seeing a mechanic about it. By the time I did, I was informed by him that my car wasn't roadworthy and thats a big issue fior insurance purposes.

My brakes in my MK1 Focus squeal when it's wet out, could that be related to the moisture in the bearings?

I'd say that thats more down to the pads/discs rather than the bearings. It could be brake dust either. Get them checked out.

thanks for your help guys, took it to a mechanic first thing this morning and he informed me that the bearing was almost gone and that if it wasnt replaced i could be driving a trike very soon. got it sorted anyway.
