U.S. army says 3 dead in Black Hawk crash in Germany

BERLIN (Reuters) - Three crew members were killed when a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter crashed in a wooded area near a highway in southwestern Germany on Wednesday evening, a U.S. army spokesman said on Thursday.
"We are calling it an accident at the moment, pending investigation," said the spokesman for U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg, declining to give further details.
The UH-60 Black Hawk crashed at about 6 p.m. (12 noon EST) on Wednesday near a motorway junction between Viernheim and Lorsch, near Heidelberg.
The spokesman could not confirm local media reports that the helicopter went up in flames on hitting the ground. Some 42,000 U.S. military personnel are based in Europe and U.S. Army Europe has its headquarters in Heidelberg.

    Terrible News, RIP.

I can't believe they still have 42000 troops in Germany.

Just looked it up and the UK still have 23000 stationed there.

Surely in these days of defense cuts to capability and equipment, having these troops garrisoned (rather than 'forward deployed' as in the Middle East) in germany is a drain on finances.

I can understand the importance of a presence in Europe for the US. It forms part of the logistical route to Iraq and Afghanistan. But doies it have to be so large?
