Okay, with further investigation I think I need some kind of interface to go between the cable and the pc?

Thats an ODB2 to RS232 interface. RS232 is rarely on modern home PCs or laptops as its a legacy interface( some servers and routers still uses if for configuration etc etc)

You would be better off getting a USB to ODB2 cable.

^ That's good advice. USB is the way to go.

    What year is your Focus?

It's 04 Mk1 but I have a laptop which has a serial connection so don't need USB, would I need anything else though other than the wire, laptop and 3rd party software?

Will your next laptop have serial?

    Otherwise that's all you need.

If it didn't I could always get a serial to usb dongle but I don't plan on getting another laptop.:)

I'm confused why would you but this over a OBD2 to usb.

    It says in description:
Warning: Do not link this cable directly to a laptop, you will need a interface in between the cable and laptop.

It is literally just linking up the wires there is no circuit decoding the messages or anything you need an interface tool inbetween to do that for you.

Where as do a search for OBD2 to USB and you will get readers that have the circuitry needed to decode the signals as well as software as well as being able to connect to any PC or laptop. They come as cheap as 20 quid including shippping.
