Motor Tax - Used Car

Just closed a deal on a used car yesterday and plan to pick it up/pay for it on Saturday. The motor tax is up however. And the motor tax people are not answering the phone because of the strike thingy.

From what I know I need to fire off a form (RF something or other) that I will get on Saturday telling the motor tax people that I have taken ownership of the car, then get the online pin for the car, and then I can make the payment online, and then I wait for the disc to arrive.

I am guessing all the above will take 7/10 working days - in the meantime can I drive the car?

My old one was written off in an accident (by an uninsured driver in, tale of woe for another day however...) and I seriously need a car for work and life in general - is there any sort of grace period you get in this sort of situation?

    Any help much appreciated!!

In theory you shouldnt drive the car as it would be un-taxed, but in practice you may be ok as long as you explain to the Garda that you have just bought the vehicle.

The garage should do the change of ownership for you - then you'll get the new log book at tax renewal in around 10-14 working days.

It's unlikely you'll get a PIN number in the post either. Best thing to do is head to the tax office when you get your VLC back from Shannon, fill in the RF100a (I think) and pay for tax there and then.

While driving, between picking up the car and getting the tax, keep a copy of the receipt (showing date of transfer of ownership) from the dealer in the car. Should appease any Gardai that stop you about the tax.

Thats a right pain in the proverbials and makes sod all sense to me. Do you reckon if I gave the money to the dealer and asked him to tax it on my behalf for a three month period or so it would work? Thought of traipsing round in an untaxed car for a few weeks waiting for some garda to stop me for something I cannot avoid is not appealing.

If I were to go up to one of the motor tax offices and do it in person would I still face the same delays or could I get it done there and then?

Ah - perfect, that seems to be the solution. Many thanks!

I recently sent off a VRC in the middle of January, I had the new one within days and the new tax renewal within a week.

What you could try is goto the online motor tax and try using the last 6 digits of either engine no. or chassis no. not too sure which as your PIN. If not I'd drive it around as normal untill you get the forms sent out to you, if you're stopped just explain that you've reciently purchased the car and you're waiting for the forms etc to be sent out, you'll be given a few days to present it to your local gardai station in which case you can go into the tax office and get a disc any day, que's are crazy at the moment though.
