I'll be travelling to Oz shortly on a one way ticket. I've been told that insurance can only be bought when you have a return date. Is this ture?
Can anyone recommend an insurnace company that will cover this? Thanks

NO, just a few months, maybe a year. Not really sure until I get there and see what happens

Just buy annual multi trip - AIB, BoI and VHI all sell it. Not dates needed, covered for the year. however, do check the small print as I'm not sure if these cover 'living' away for a year, possibly not. 'Muti Trip' may actually be describing what it is for:D

Most of the multi-trips require travel starting and finishing in Ireland. It's in the small print and you could potentially have a claim denied.

I had this problem myself a few weeks back. Eventually used these guys:

The name was given to me by Hibernian or Aviva or whatever they call themselves these days. Bit more expensive but it's designed for one-way trips.

Multi-trip is not geared towards backpackers at all, its the opposite of what he wants.

I used these, very reasonable: http://www.getcover.com

You buy insurance for a period of time when travelling, it has nothing to do with how many flights you are taking or when you are coming back.

I got cover with World Nomads, one of very few places that offer single way cover.

I got mine for 3 days i think.. I leave in a week.

To everyone else, be very very careful with insurance policies, if you use a return journey policy and only intend on a single journey it is void. They will find out that you never booked a return ticket. Hopefully nobody will need to claim, but if you do end up in the ****ter with no paddle, a valid insurance policy is better than none.... unless you are a millionaire and can pay to be airlifted, expensive medical procedures etc.

    Also, something nobody thinks of...
Ambulance trips in Australia can cost a fortune, thousands.. If you are spending most of your time in 1 state, join the ambulance service in that state, you pay a yearly subscription (it's not a huge amount), and then should you need it you don't pay for ambulance trips.

yeap had the same issue myself. World Nomads are a pleasure to deal with but be careful on excess stuff like ipods an expensice cameras as they have a cap on that sort of stuff that they didnt have before. Afaik they are the only crowd that do a one way trip and you pay a premium for it.
