Beyond Belief

I know of an event which took place in recent times which beggars belief and as a person who pays high taxes, quite frankly it infuriates me!

A child from a family got christened in Co Donegal. After the ceremony the Priest who performed the ceremony got a call from a Priest in Co Mayo asking could he perform a christening in Co Mayo for him that same day as he was unable to do so. The Priest obliged and went to Co Mayo.

When he got there...................IT WAS THE SAME CHILD THAT HE CHRISTENED EARLIER!!!!!

This type of fraud of the Social Welfare system is cheating the State out of millions.

This was a family from the Travelling community, and it annoys me that a minority give the decent law abiding Travellers (whom I have friends) a bad name.

Which begs the question then, why christen a child twice in the one day then?

have you got a source to post up now?

sorry, its just that some people want to see travellers in the worst light possible. no proof, no point imo.

Exactly. There is no logical reason for that to be the case, is there.

Dont put me in that bracket. Some of my friends are Travellers and I've great time for them and I find their tradition's very interesting.

Like I said, I was told by a very good source. You choose not to believe it, that up to you, but pershaps you shouldnt dismiss a story because you think someone has it in for sections of our society. You couldnt be more wrong and as you said no point, dont bother replying if you dont believe the story.

ok, i see you've changed your original post.

why did you bother mentioning it was a traveller family in the first place (before you edited)

surely that shouldn't come into the equation

Ha, Ha! You didnt even read my original post properly!

I changed the wording slightly as I wasnt sure whether I spelled 'christening' wrong and changed were the mistake was made!

A piece of advice, before making judgement, read the thing properly!

    doubt it.

anyway, lets say your little story is true. how do you think the fraudsters gained from having two baptismal certs?

Why would a priest in Mayo ring one in Donegal? Then just on top of that, the same baby gets christened!

Having 2 baptismal certs makes no sense.

AFAIK, they aren't of much use officially, until national school anyway.

Now, if they had 2 birth certs, that would be different.

I've heard this story too..... only mine happened in Monaghan and the people were foreign nationals. Wonder if there is any truth to it at all....

I'm sure the social welfare needs Birth Certs for childrens allowence and such benefits, i doubt baptismal certs would suffice.

Also, its along way from Donegal to Mayo for a christening, surely a priest from a nearer parish could of done it??

    Rule of thumb:
If its beyond belief.... its probably not true.

    Parliamentary Debates

    Senator Camillus Glynn:
I received a telephone call recently from a councillor in the west who expressed concern about social welfare fraud. He referred to an incident where a non-national couple had their child christened in a particular parish in his area. One week later, the same priest was standing in for a priest in a neighbouring parish when, lo and behold, the same couple presented to have their child christened. I am sure it is not because they like baptismal cake so much that they had the child christened twice. There was surely a more sinister motivation at play. I understand baptismal certificates are being accepted as proof of birth as well as birth certificates, which is something that should be reviewed. This is a scam and it must be investigated.

And the investigation leads to... ?
When the priest involved sits in the witness box and testifies that this happened, then I'll believe it.

Until then its just more Xenophobic propaganda.

The priest in Co Mayo couldnt get anyone else.

Not really a long journey...assuming the priest was from South Donegal and the christening was in East Mayo....

Social Welfare only accept birth certs.
