SKY TWO aspect ratio?

    Hi,

Can anybody here confirm whether UPC transmits Sky Two in widescreen or fullscreen?

I haven't watched anything on that channel before. It is currently showing Futurama is 4:3, and when I set the television to "force" widescreen, the picture doesn't seem right.

Is it that UPC is getting the aspect ratio signal for Sky Two like TG4?

    Cheers

Well if you "force" your TV into 16:9 mode whilst watching a 4:3 program, obviously it won't look right because it'll be stretched horizontally. I have seen a few programs on Sky Two and Sky Three and they were in 16:9 so the answer is yes, UPC do broadcast this channel in widescreen. UPC don't make any changes to the aspect ratio of any channels on the digital platform. If they come in as 4:3, they go out as 4:3....this explains the anomaly with TG4 which has been discussed in another thread.

I know that it would stretch it, but it's not that. It just looks not quite right.

The TV is set to automatic, the UPC box is set to widescreen so why is Sky Two coming in as 4:3?

    What else would cause that?

If you're not watching a widescreen programme (futurama), then why would you expect Sky Two to come in widescreen at that time? All of Sky's channels, with the exception of Sky Sports News, transmit in widescreen format so long as widescreen broadcast material is available.

Either test during an ad-break (which always go out as widescreen regardless of the format the programme being broadcast is in), or wait for a widescreen programme to be broadcast.

I think it may be Sky doing some sort of testing. Was watching the simpsons on Sky1HD earlier and it was in 4:3, switched to regular Sky1 and it was grand except at the very left of the screen there was about a 2 cm border witch was showing what was going on on the right side of the screen. Very confusing but all other stations were grand

Futurama was produced in 4:3 so goes out in 4:3. The exception is the new series made for Comedy Central, that was produced in 16:9 so should go out as such.

Okay, I thought it was made in 16:9, but the ads were still 4:3 and so was Caprica which came on next. The UPC box was definately set to widescreen.

When I turned on the box first tonight RTE was also in 4:3. I flicked through some other channels which were all 16:9 and when I went back to RTE One it was still 4:3 and then after a second or two popped back into 16:9.

Could this be a problem with the UPC box?

Would Sky run tests that would interfere with customers?
