Advice needed on 2/3 day trip

Looking to head skiing for 2/3 days around 29 March. Haven't skied in about 10 years and bringing son of 18 who wants to learn to snowboard.

Anybody recommend somewhere that is reasonable price wise, with decent snow at that time and accessible from the airport!

Was thinking of Pas De La Casa in Andorra but reading some of the stuff here maybe some of the Italian resorts?

    Thanks!

If you go to Treviso (Ryanair's idea of Venice) then you have a short-ish transfer to Arabba, which has a huge ski area and not mega expensive.

From Turin, you can go to Sauze d'Oulx or Sestriere.

From Grenoble, you can go to Chamrousse with a very short transfer, and nice cheap resort. Or 2 Alps if you want somewhere big.

all the above, plus, if you're rich, Chamonix, Avoriez / Morzine and Verbier at 1, 1 1/2 and 2 hours from Geneva airport respectively. They would all be good candidates for good snow at that time of the year too

    Thanks for the replies.

Was thinking of Vaugany which is around 2 Apls.

Ryanair only fly once a week to Grenoble from Dublin so may look at Geneva!

Seems to be impossible to get any of these flights for just a few days. Most of Ryanair's flights to Grenoble are only once a week!

Maybe the TGV from Paris is an option - or even from London on Eurostar!

Personally, I'm a big fan of the TGV from Paris, or even the overnight. I've often worked Friday, got an evening flight to Paris, got the train to Bourg St Maurice, skied Les Arcs Saturday and Sunday (got a hotel in Seez for Saturday night, cheap and free shuttle right to the funi), train back on Sunday night, fly Monday morning and back to work by breaktime.

I'm intrigued! How much would this normally cost?

Depends on the cost of the flight and the train. Generally not too much, the hotel gives me a ticket that gets me a discount on the lift pass, but I hire boots and skis on the spot to save the hassle of carrying them. The hotels in Seez are a fraction of the price of the mountain ones, but are just as handy. Not much night life, but on a weekend ski trip, I just ski the legs off myself (have been known to eat lunch going on on the chairlift) and am knackered by evening.

If you are considering flying to Geneva, then maybe the Munich to Soll threads earlier in jan might be useful to you as well for info on access from Munich.

Munich is good as Aer Lingus fly there twice daily and it is only about 2 hours on the train from a ton of resorts in Austria. Soll is pretty cheap.

As per Eileen's suggestions there are also trains direct from the UK to Bourg St Maurice, though I've a feeling they're sat to sat only, opens further possibilities of cheap flight to UK, or a very green carferry - train - train trip to slopes

What is the transfer from Bourg to Les Arcs Eileen? Never been there, would you recommend?

The funi up to Les Arcs actually starts at the bottom of the train station. You can get off the train, walk down the platform, cross the tracks on the bridge, and you are there! There are ski hire places there as well, or you can go up to Arc 1600 and hire there. Of course, you could buy breakfast first!

That's why I tend to go to Les Arcs if I'm doing a weekend ski. Plus, it's a huge ski area with some real challenges.

Munich to Hintertux - Glacial skiing and good conditions at that time of the year.

Tignes in France from Geneva, or Val disere At that time of the year I would be looking at resorts above 1800 meters.

Saas Fee and Zermatt would be good but slightly expensive

Obergurgal in Austria is awsome aswell

You can do Pas in 2 hours from Toulouse airport if you hire a car so thats not too bad.

If you were going the transfer/public transport route then it would probably take an age to get there.

Much more handy would be flying DUB - SZG. You can get to load of Austrian resorts within 45 mins of Salzburg airport and can get the bus or train.

Ski Amade region, Zell/Kaprun, Lofer, Saalbach/Hinterglemm would all be ideal.

Even if you flew to Munich then you have a lot of options within 2 hours and can get the train from the airport to a number of resorts.

If you fancy France then there are loads of resort within an hour of Geneva. morzine/PDS being one of them.

There were some great deals flying with Swiss airlines a while back although you did have to change at Zurich I think.

Nope you just jump on the Train at Zurich and it will bring you to most of the main ski resorts in Switzerland.

Approx 80 Euro return on the train including Bus transfers if the train does not go all the way to the resort

Again thanks for all the suggestions!

Once I decide I'll post back!

After checking all the options I found a special ex Gatwick to Borovets in Bulgaria for a total of £275 for the week half board and including ski pack and lessons. Last skiied in Blugaria about 15 years ago so know what to expect and assume things have improved food wise!

Couldn't beat that price for a first time skier! And a week instead of 3 days will be much better.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!
