Decent Protein Bars

I find it really difficult to find protein bars that aren't ridiculously expensive (ie; 3 euro + per bar).

I'm looking for something that's got high protein, low sugar, doesn't taste disgusting, reasonably healthy.

It's almost impossible to find snacks that I like that aren't carbs, want to get more protein in my diet.

Can anyone suggest places around Dublin city centre or even Blanch where they can be gotten?

Off-hand, no. Most protein bars are crap, with poor quality protein and either a lot of sugar or a lot of sugar alcohols. Most of them have a truly frightening amount of calories.

You might try making your own. This one should meet your requirements.

I've got a recipe from Damien Maher floating about, I'll see if I can find it.

    1/2 cup pecans
    1/2 cup walnuts
    1/3 cup flaxmeal
    1/3 cup nut butter
    4-6 eggs
    pinch salt
    1/3 cup honey
    6 scoops protein powder

Mix all ingredients, put on oiled baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes at 175 C. I'm assuming you bash the nuts rather than use them whole.

I didn't make this, but I know some people who did, and who liked the result.

If you just want more protein, and don't want to eat chicken breast or tuna, you might consider making a whey shake.

I like Clif Mojo bars (10g protein per bar), don't know if you can buy them in Ireland though.

200 calories per bar, and only 10g of protein? Plus the first ingredient is sugar.

Never said they were the best bar around but the nutritional value is good or better than many other bars I've seen, without going down the home made route.

God everything is so full of sugar!!

Making my own seems to be the route to go! This will be my first time baking :D

Actually, I've just remembered the Atkins Morning Break bars (or whatever they are called now) is not too bad. Something like 12g of protein in a 138 calorie bar. €7.50 for five.
