Should i hold off purchasing a combo now if there may be broadcasts in dvb-t2 and we can then get BBC1 and BBC2???

The Irish standard is MPEG4 DVB-T.

Unless you are in a UK Freeview HD spillover area (e.g. east coast of Ireland) then buying a DVB-T2 box is a waste of money. If you live in a border area, NI will not have Freeview HD until 2012, so even then you'd be better off waiting until 2012 when the boxes will be substantially cheaper.

The standard is set at DVB-T/MPEG4 and the specification is published. I have been in touch with Terracom and they have confirmed the Saorview spec that they are testing to is what is published on rtenl.ie for FTA receivers (again DVB-T MPEG4). Its a done deal.

No one can predict how things will go 3-5 years down the line but seeing as it took us 10 years to here dont expect DVB-T2 to play any role in Irish DTT for a long long time and even then it is likely to be similar to the UK model where existing primary channels are on the existing technology (their case DVB-T MPEG2, our case DVB-T MPEG4) with maybe a new DVB-T2 MUX for HD channels. RTE may still decide to launch just 1 or 2 HD channels on DVB-T MPEG4 at this hypothetical point in the dark distant future.

This is all speculation. The only confirmed specification is DVB-T MPEG4.

For all we know we may skip out DVB-T2 and go to the next jump in technology....

If BBC1 and BBC2 are carried on Saorview it will be in DVB-T MPEG4 as with all the other channels

I always appreciate your responses Slegs, clear concise and straight to the point. Many thanks. I will be installing the combo box for my father and i want to ensure that everthing i buy is correct and will work.

Many thanks again. I may have more questions shortly but i guess thats what these forums are for.

    Regards
