I come under the recall of models that are listed by year on the Toyota web site, but on calling my dealer i was told to wait on a letter from Toyota ireland to see if my vehicle is one for recall. It will take two weeks for any letter to come. Anyone get a recall letter yet.

Sit tight. The letter will come if it applies to you. In a couple of weeks, the dealers will be able to confirm if your car requires this work too Im sure.

Yep - sit tight and wait. I doubt anyone has received a letter yet. Give it a week or two.

What if you brought it in from the UK? Lots of Uk imports floating about...

Contact Toyota Ireland with the chassis number. They will be able to verify if it is due a recall. They may not be able to tell you right now but I'd imagine that within a week or so they'll have a better picture.

Im sure they will miss some cars but Id say when they have most sorted, they will issue a statement saying ....if you think your car might be affected, call your dealer.

In that case you'll get a letter from Toyota if your car is due the recall. It may not be so don't worry about it too much.

I have not had any problems with this vehicle. The last one i had gave me a fright when the accelerator got stuck in a mat and my friend who was with me had to pull it free and pull out the mat while i was driving. Went straight to the dealer next day and got a different type of mats and no problems after that. I believe lots of mats were recalled in the US because of this type of problem but never heard anything about recalls here.

We have an Avensis that'll probably be recalled. Would there be any issues as we bought the car in the North ?

the mats in the US were genuine Toyota mats, unfortunately many Irish dealers use cheaper universal mats.

I've never seen any Toyotas I sold with pedals sticking under the mats, as long as the proper ones were used and the plastic retaining clips were in place there shouldn't be an issue.

I thought there was something else causing them to stick, something in the pedal mechanism itself

Call Toyota Ireland. Have them put you car on the Irish system for this recall and any other potential recalls. It will help to have this done for any other future warranty claims. If you have previously had warranty repairs carried out in the Republic of Ireland then you can probably assume that your Avensis is already listed with Toyota Ireland.

with the current recall it's to do with faulty mechanisms giving odd readings on potentiometers in the electronic pedal.

I'm referring to an earlier issue in the US where pedals got caught under mats on some models.

It should be noted that taking the car out of gear or even dipping the clutch will ensure you don't go out of control.

Thanks crosstownuk, we can get the warranty work done in the north, it's no problem, we're beside the border.

Agreed but in city traffic the potential of rear-ending the vehicle in front (a Toyota? :D )is a cause for concern. Hence the recall.

I'm sure that Toyota will see to it that all affected vehicles are rectified ASAP - after all, it is Toyota.

Some Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107 are affected as they use the same equipment as the Aygo.

Cannot remember if they were toyota mats or not, but they were heavy duty rubber mats and the accelerator got stuck under the outer rim of the mat. The vehicle i have now has the mats clicked into place.

Co Foudnder of Apple Steve Wozniak has reported he believes its a Software Glitch. He's been able to recreate the Acceleration Glitch very predictably in his 2010 Prius - a vehicle which is not part of the current Recall.

Toyota has responded and they are taking in Wozniak's car for Closed Circuit Testing. His problem has been going on for 2 months but it wasnt till CNET recently carried the story that the issue gained any traction.

    http://jalopnik.com/5461945/apple-co+founder-claims-toyota-prius-has-scary-software-problem-he-can-dupilcate

Wisely (or Unwisely) he does not mention publicly what the conditions are for creating the runaway acceleration.

Most of Toyota's new models do not use mechanical pedals. Its in every way conceivable its all down to some Rounding Error in the computer system thats done it.

But of course the reality of that makes the term Brake Override System a joke - something that realistically could have been implemented rather easily as a programming function: "Yeah, we shouldn't let the computer keep revving the engine while the human is pressing the Brake. Gotcha."

Toyota are very good about recalls, I was contacted a few years back about having the rear halfshafts replaced on a 90 series LC, the vehicle was 10yrs at that stage and they were still done.
Toyota do things right with recalls in my experience

Thought this woudl have popped up by now and I forgot. Heard on the radio today that current Prius's are being recalled due to an ABS issue. Radio said only 58 were sold in Ireland so should'nt take long to sort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

there would be a good few new model Prius's imported from the UK as they got them a long time before Irish dealers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

If all the new prius have to be recalled, it will be very serious as its a huge seller in the home markets and many reports are that Toyota would take a massive hit re consumer confidence.

Just checked the Toyota ireland web page, and the Rav4 is missing from their list of recalls today. So thats good news.

I'm wondering if my next car should be a Toyota?? I think they could pose good value for money in their effort to regain sales.

an open question for those affected by Toyota recalls.

How would you describe your experience of the recall process?

Were you satisfied with communication received through to servicing of your car?

Would you buy a Toyota car in the future?

If I was you I would not buy a Toyota, they are built too lightly, lack any styling at all and are far from being as reliable as the common myth says. Toyotas are no different to the rest of stuff to come out of asia and they just lack any vision or innovation anymore plus most of them are like they are designed by a Junior infants art class!

My advice, buy a European (preferably German) Diesel car and you will get a solid car built on years of German precision and one which will make your average Prius look like a guzzler in comparision. Toyotas are way overpriced and as a nation and as Europeans we should always support industries closer to home, some of the parts for the various European cars are manufactured in Ireland as unbelievable as it sounds!

Toyota's the most boring and bland car on the road

yes, I would like a German diesel car but they are pricey too.
Given Toyota's recent problems, this may be reflected in better prices.

I got my recall letter about 3 weeks ago and booked it into Tony Burkes in Galway and the accelerator fix took 30mins and they washed the car for free too. Will I buy Toyota again?............ most definitely Yes.

    good to hear.
Toyota's recovery from this will depend on their retaining customers and it sounds like current owners will remain loyal ones.
