what do you mean full screen? Do you mean 16:9 or 4:3..

They would transmit in 16:9 for 16:9 programs 4:3 for 4:3 programs and ussally films are 14:9 ( the black bars at the top and bottom during films)

There's no other plausible way to take "fullscreen" in this context, so I'll assume you mean 4:3.

As the above poster said, they transmit 16:9 programmes (say Nip/Tuck) in 16:9. But in a way, they don't. Since you've posted on the Cable/MMDS forum, it seems noteworthy to point out that aspect ratio signaling doesn't work on UPC. I'm not sure where the fault is there (I'll have to check if it works on DTT)

Therefore all 16:9 programs will be stretched to fill 4:3, unless you force your television to use 16:9. So, from a purely technical standpoint, no: they broadcast only in 4:3 (because at the end of the day, its a 4:3 signal).

But in practice, 16:9 programmes have the full 16:9 image, just not in the right shape :P

    Hi,

    Yes, I meant 4:3.

My TV is set to Auto Detect, but TG4 is constantly in 4:3.

"it seems noteworthy to point out that aspect ratio signaling doesn't work on UPC" - what do you mean by this?

Yeah autodetect would really be where you'd have problems.

Lets say you're watching (on a 4:3 telly) something in 4:3, like South Park (TG4 have a thing about that too, but we'll pretend it's 4:3). You're telly shows it fine because its the same aspect ratio as it. However, suppose after, Nip/Tuck is on, which is 16:9.

Under normal circumstances the channel should have a signal that indicates "Hey, this is a 16:9 broadcast, so squash it into the right shape". This works on RTÉ One and Two, BBC etc. However, on TG4 it doesn't. Therefore, a 4:3 telly will continue thinking its showing a 4:3 signal, because it hasn't been told otherwise, and therefore it will show up distorted.

Basically, to get 16:9 programmes to show correctly on TG4, you'll have to force the telly to use that aspect ratio, even though on RTÉ One, it would have done it itself

UPC does not receive any widescreen signalling from TG4 and never has done either

I understand you now. Thank you.
