If your knee is still sore when you run you might want to get it checked out by a professional of some sort. People here can give you examples saying they had similar pains etc and it took x number of weeks to recover, but you should probably either get it checked out, or just treat it yourself with ice etc and dont run until it feels better. But the most important thing is to listen to your body, if its in pain, dont just ignore it. I've had to learn this the hard way myself so just be smart about it.

It could be any number of things. Take a trip to the physio if it isn't getting better.

    Firstly no medical advice.

However I'll tell you however about an injury that sidelined me recently. I got it from racing motor bikes on a bike (yes I won) but there are many causes for the family of injury. It started with a pain below the kneecap that was made worse by going up and down stairs. It was a patella tendon strain and by running through it I delevoped and inflammation of the tissue behind the kneecap as the kneecap wasn't tracking properly. Three months on and it's improving but the patella tendon is not right. While I'm not a runner I was in okay running shape and I've gone from 34 minute 10km shape to 50 minute 10km shape with no return to form likely. My advice would be to get it treated by a competent professional asap. I've always had success with those trained by the nsrt.

Googling runners knee gives ample advice about knee problems which have pain on stairs as a classical symptom.

As recommended above, the best advice that can be given here is to seek the advice of a professional to ensure it's properly treated.
