Recommend a Dealer

Like a lot of people, I will be in the market to buy a good second hand car sometime in 2010. But also like a lot of people, I just don't know who the good dealers are and who are the ones to avoid.

Would it be possible for people with good experiences of dealers to post some details on here, who the dealer is and how good they are. A balanced view would be good. This might help me spot a good dealer when I see their cars advertised on the net.

Please avoid mentioning bad dealers, I don't want to know nor want to get involved in a legal quagmire! I just want to know of ones that people have had good experiences of buying a car at and would recommend. Also I am not interested in hearing from people who work for dealers who post on this site. Sorry, I just want a customer's view.

Mods, if this has been done already, can you merge the thread or something like that.

By the way, users with only one post who recommend a dealer, I will be very suspicious of! You should have at least 10 posts before I take you seriously!

    Thanks All!

you should be buying based on the car, not the dealer imo.
sometimes bad dealers get cracking cars and sometimes great dealers get lemons.

    That's a fair point.

However, there is more to a dealer than the actual car they are selling.

There are such things as how good is the warrantee they offer, eg 6 month or 12 month. Do they put all their cars through NCT for you if the NCT is due. Do they service the car before selling. Do they fix problems that arise.

Good dealers don't sell crashed or clocked cars as an example. I have seen on this site reports of the problems people face with bad dealers and I want to avoid that.

So just looking for a good dealer that people would recommend. Thanks for your input, but can people be more specific rather than say general things like some dealers are good, some are bad.

I really don't think that's possible, particularly in the current economic climate. I don't generally buy from dealers, but if I did I would do all the same checks as I would were it a private sale. As gumbo said, it's the car you're buying not the dealer. The only thing a dealer can offer you is a warranty, and the only warranty that's worth anything is in writing, detailing exactly what is and is not covered, and for how long.
