Lap display in Garmin 405

I'm using the 405 to record my laps at track.

However, when I use the lap function, the display shows the total time rather than the time/lap.

I've scoured the manual but still can't figure out how to change this.

Would appreciate help with this as have reached the tearing-my-hair-out stage.

    Thanks.

do you have it set to auto-lap, or are you doing it manually?
Are you using a screen that includes a data field that show's lap data, e.g. time-lap, or time-last lap?

The manual (page 25) explains all of the data fields:
    http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/Forerunner405_OwnersManual.pdf

BTW: Don't expect the Garmin to be too accurate on a track, as the tight circular loops aren't great for a GPs-based watch, which doesn't do high frequency trackpoint recording.

Krusty, whilst your thinking about laps I just found a new issue on my 405 on the last run I got back from.

Every auto lap it kept on popping up a message "Lap Database Almost Full", I've only done a quick Googling so far but it's just come up with some stuff about the Edge units and there is nothing on the Garmin 405 forums about the issue. Any ideas as to the least destructive way of cleaning it out so that I don't loose my next run?

Lapping manually. It's to get times round a track. Will try and customise a data field and have that displayed.

Will let you know if that works in case other people have that problem.

Do you not remove the existing data, once it's been transferred to your computer? That's what I do, and have never run into any problems. I have never seen that error. Maybe it's time for a hard reset?

Nope, I thought it just got rid of the old data itself, but seems not.

How do you delete the existing data?

I can't belive I'm being such an idiot with this at the moment, don't tell anyone.

See, the problem is as soon as you hit the lap button, it's going to show you the time from the new lap, not the lap you just completed (so you may want to use time-last lap).

So lets say you're doing 400m intervals (one lap of the track), followed by an easy jog (time-based), set up the watch display with two fields:
    1) time-lap
    2) time-last lap

When you set off, press start. When you complete your lap, press lap. Time-last lap will now display your previous lap time, while time-lap will display your current lap time (recovery/easy jog). To go again, hit lap and run like hell. :)

It's actually an option in the Garmin-dongle-software-icon thingey (Krusty draws a blank). You can erase individual runs on the watch, by looking at them in the history, and holding the lap button for around 5 seconds.

    Oh, that's exactly what I need :-)

    Thanks

I've got one of the old wrist mounted laptops 305s and that lets you delete big chunks in one go - History > delete > keep one month (or delete all) etc.

You are right, 405 data delete itself once it has been transfered to PC.
I have had my 405 for 2.5years, and never got a problem.

It's an option in the ANT+ agent. Right click on the icon on your taskbar and choose Device Settings. From there there is an AutoErase checkbox that will delete data from the device following a successful transfer.

That is what I didn't have checked for some reason. It is happy enough to still delete the .tcx files from the devices directory on thePC after about a month though, and the actual tracks get removed from the watch regardless of any other settings. Just seems that it remembers the number of autolaps "permanently" until you manually delete them by default.

Should have it all sorted now.
