Hello all, quick question concerning my yearly weight loss routine.

    Im a male in my late 20's. Height; 6ft2. Weight; 15 - 21 stone.

Basically for the last 4 years i have fallen into what im sure could be described as an ill advised weight loss/gain routine.
I eat what i want & don't exercise at all for six months & then fast like a monk & exercise a lot for the other six.
I basically go from being a fairly lean looking guy to a fat lump within the space of a few months.
My weight varies from 15 stone around June to anything up to 21 stone after Christmas & then as usual step on the brakes & back on to the healthy eating & plenty of exercise to get in shape for the summer.

Question 1 - Is this method just unusual or would you say its a bad idea?

Question 2 - How do i come to a compromise? As in, how do i stay in shape?

When i lose the weight for some reason i can not keep it off & inevitably fall back into a slob-like routine of eating all sorts of sh!te. I cant maintain the weight loss & its starting to wreck my head that i have to start all over again to lose the weight.
Sorry for going on a bit, i won't ask any more questions after this.

Well to answer question one - ITS NOT A METHOD, its called being lazy, no offence. You're makin it sound like this is a program you are following - be fit and healthy for first half or year and be a slob the other half - wtf like. You are asking is this a bad idea???? Look if you like being in and out of shape like this then yes its a great idea.

As for question two - HARD WORK is the answer. There is no secret to staying in shape so dont look for one. Make your goals realistic, dont try to be a monk, it wont work. Plan out a fitness and diet routine that is actually plausable and try to stick to it. You reep what you sew and all that.

No offence but i didn't ask to be bitched at. Its my first time even looking into this section. I was genuinely asking for advice on something i have very little knowledge on, not snide, cliche laden criticism. Constructive criticism by all means but don't be using my thread as a means of gaining "thanks" from the other fitness section regulars. We all have to begin somewhere you know.
I work hard on losing weight for 4 or 5 months & usually shed around 5 stone so im hardly lazy, i simply cant keep the weight off. You don't know me so please keep off the personal remarks.

Can anyone else give me more accurate advise on how to keep the flab off once i have reached my goal weight?

seriously man, what do you expect? you asked if your "method" is a bad idea, yes it is.

with the reply you posted to OPH dont be surprised if this is the last reply you get. Im not sure what anybody can tell you except to stop doing whatever it is that causes the weight re-gain to start.

You know nothing about this guy so is there any reason why you feel the need to jump down his throat?

Listen OP, you need to examine the reasons why you go off the rails - to go from 15 to 21 stone is a massive jump so why do you think you do it?

What it all boils down to is lifestyle and making choices - living like a monk is obviously not the answer and neither is binging. You need to find the middle ground that works for you.

look, im not sure how much air brushing you expect folks to do here, but the op is asking if a weight fluctuation of 6 stone a year and then off and back on again is unusual (YES) and a bad idea (YES). there is nothing else to say excep that it is a bad idea, and the OP is able to lose the weight so putting it back on so rapidly is down to some other reason and whatever that reason it is not something that can be resolved by amateur psychology on an internet bulletin board.

Ah right I see. Glad we got it all wrapped up within 6 posts so!

    Fair enough. Thanks.

Maybe 'method' was the wrong word to describe my weight loss/gain as it implies that i deliberately want to get fat again. Which is not the case at all.
Just dont seem to have the motivation for keeping the weight off thats all.

    Never mind.

If you are losing 5 or 6 stone in as many months then you must be doing something pretty extreme. The problem with that is that it is not sustainable at all. Maybe if you tried just change your lifestyle bit by bit then you would maintain a reasonable weight for your size - like instead of eating 6000 calories a day for 6 months & 1000 calories a day for the other 6 months eat 3000 a day all year [I am totally guessing numbers here]. Stop being a saint/sinner basically.
Why don't you post up what you eat when you are dieting & what you eat when you are binging & people can point out where you are going wrong...actually you'll probably see it yourself when its in front of you.

    Hello.

To be honest don't know how calories work so all that stuff is like another language to me.
Weight loss diet. Breakfast; 1 cup of coffee. Dinner; 1 weight watchers meal (they're rotten btw). Supper; 1 bowl of porridge.
To be honest its not something i'd recommend as its quite energy draining & i am usually hungry (i often dream about food...seriously) but if you eat like this & exercise (walk & jog) for approx 1.5 hours a day you do lose huge amounts of weight. There is a reward for this sort of routine.

Don't think its a longterm solution though as the feckin weight goes back on.
