I have always bought a tv licence but due to recession have not renewed since last september.
Going to an post to pay today or tomorrow but was just wondering if i have to backdate it or can i put it in my girlfriends name and say that i have moved out and rented it to tenants.
Dont mind paying but would prefer to avoid back payment.
If anyone has a theory or an opinion i would appreciate it.

Never heard of anyone being pursued for arrears.

An Post will just be happy you have a licence at all...

what happens if you go travelling for a few months ? or even go home for a few weeks/months.
still have to pay ? thats a bit silly i think.

If the TV is left on the premises, it still requires a licence.

You could leave the set with family/friends when you go away. (would also be advantageous from a security viewpoint)

Realisticly though if a TV licence inspector calls while youre away how can they inspect your place if noone is there to let them in ? How can they bring charges when there is no named person there to bring charges against ?

They have a monthly system TV Licence Stamps. Not sure how they work.

Back payments put the licence in another persons name, if your living with others.

What if one just happened to have the same first name and surname as a previous occupant (long shot I know but not totally unprecedented)

Or someone's TV broke down and they didnt get around to replacing it for a few months

On the other hand couldnt a married woman revert to using her previous name

    Wonderful system !
