All the matches are on BBC HD this weekend. Possibly they plan to cover the whole tournament in HD this year ?

It certainly looks that way. Six Nations Forum will also be on BBC HD

Nice one, fair play to BBC.
Pity the voice of rugby died last week. Dream combo would be Bills voice & a HD game esp later when we stuff England in Twickenham!!! ;)

I hope this six nations wont be boring this year, Its the world cup when we see how good Ireland really are!

Im actually not 100% sure the Ireland home matches will actually be in proper HD, but upscaled. I hope im wrong.

The BBC don't show upscaled programming on their HD channel. They are not allowed.

Does this mean BBC is covering the Dublin match as opposed to RTE? Or is it that RTE already have HD cameras and just don't broadcast in HD?

As far as im aware a 3rd party does the camera work and uplinking. BBC and RTE pay for the coverage.

Ah, OK. Thought it unlikely the BBC would be allowed to take over Croker!!

Providing coverage does not equate to taking over Croke Park.

Next you'll be saying the BBC commentators/crew will have to broadcast from outside the stadium. I think since "God save the queen" has been played there we have moved on a little!

Someone can correct me here, but in the old days the host broadcaster done the camera work/transmissions, but nowadays a 3rd party broadcaster is awarded the contract for these sporting events.

I think BBC have been doing the pictures for a few years now. If you look at the graphics on six nations matches it is always the BBC captions with a little RTE logo stuck over the area where BBC normally is. Great to see this in HD though.

IIRC matches from Croke Park last season were shown on BBCHD!

Remember watching the coverage on BBCHD rather than RTE!

Though the picture on RTE is quite good, the commentary is dreadful from Ryle Nugent ......but that is a different thread.

Also, all stations are using HD cameras as it is the standard now - just not broadcasting in HD!

    You recall incorrectly.

The English match probably was HD?

Nope. Neither of the Croke Park games were in HD. This is the first year.

My humblest apologies to all here :o

Have the distinct memory of watching BBCHD for all the Six Nations last year!

    No HD last year..

BBC do the feed they hire SIS live to cover the matches. last year was shoot in HD But wasent avalable to broadcasters.

If anyone remembers BBC got to do a interview before RTE when Ireland won against Wales, RTE send a couple of commentators at Irish games and thats it.

The BBC are the national broadcaster for Northern Ireland so not surprising.

BBC are the host broadcasters for all Six nations games outside France.

I agree that last year only the matches from the UK venues were broadcast on BBC HD.

I dont think anything broadcast from a sporting event in Ireland has been in HD until this six nations event. I think though one GAA match was recorded in HD but obviously never shown in HD as there is no HD platform in Ireland for it to be shown (RTE, Setanta etc)

The Leinster Finals in 2007 were transmitted live in HD during the earlier DTT trial.

The OB was handled by Observe.ie. All matches could potentially be shown in HD.

    Heineken Cup
    Soccer Internationals
    Golf

    On Sky Sports of course.

I think those were upscaled? The soccer certainly wasnt in true HD.

Any how, it'll be great to see the six nations in HD, i for one will be ditching RTE and watching BBC coverage. Again another programme ive decided to watch on non Irish channel because of our poor channel choice here.

Soccer internationals from Ireland are not HD unless it is a friendly match

Maybe not soccer but all heineken cup matches are hd and irish open golf. This match on saturday is not the first hd sporting broadcast.

Hi high heels, mostly it is because the Broadcasters want to at least record them in HD for future broadcast. They know HD is an unstopable force at this stage, even if many viewers are not equipped to to view HD at the moment.:)

I'm pretty sure I watched a Dublin GAA football match during the DTT Trial.

Was the 6 nations game from croke park done by RTE or the BBC? Anyone know what OB company they used?

Whats confussing is that all the other channels that were showing the six nations games (Canal+ for one) were showing BBC graphics.

I was switching between the soccer on Canal+ HD and the rugby on Canal+ sports 2.

A little out of date guys, see here from back in 2008:

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/rugby/2008/0124/sixnationsrte.html
this new four-year term also grants RTÉ host broadcast rights for all of the Irish home matches between 2010 and 2013.

RTÉ are host broadcaster for all the home games for next 4 years. BBC previously had the host broadcast deal.

The host broadcaster provides all the actual match footage to the rest of the world, including the BBC. People taking the service can decide if they want graphics included or not.

The BBC likely take a clean feed and add their own graphics locally at croke park. They do the same in France, where they aren't host broadcaster either.

    RTÉ, using Observe.

thanks for the info I was wondering as RTE graphics were used on the world feed.

also ive noticed RTE have given up some rights as setanta have the Ireland match on at the moment

    not true
Sky had an HD outside broadcast unit at the cricket in clontarf last year.
i have seen the same unit on at least one other occasion driving around dublin.

Snaps is right.. Most of the sporting events are being recorded in HD but are not broadcast due to RTE not being in HD or setanta..

Im not sure about Sky sports and the H cup any rugby in HD from that?
