New York is great, the parades and the atmosphere is further up the scale than it is here.

Berlin is good - takeaway sausage vendors and Erdingers for 1.50 that you can drink on the subways or walking down the street at lunchtime without anybody judging you. Every day is Paddys day minus all the vomit and tacky parades. Lots of parks to picnic in if the weather is good. Probably the best nightclub scene in Europe imo - oh and very cheap. you cannot lose with that city.

Brno in the Czech republic. A pint for a euro, good food, and dont get me started on the women.

Also 24 licensing, so everyday is paddys day here.

I was in Helsinki on St Patrick's day two years ago. We just wanted to use the long weekend to good use and see a bit of the world, did not care about missing the parade in Dublin. And what did we get in Helsinki? A St Patrick's Day parade! The (tiny) Irish expat community set up a parade, police escort and all... we joined right in and enjoyed it a lot :). Helsinki is beautiful that time of the year but very cold still. And there definitely is no cheap pints to be had.

Was onboard a Viking Line ship between Stockholm and Helskini last Paddys Day, excellent fun. I would definitely recommend it for something different to do. You can get a cabin for very little (especially if you are willing to go below deck and have no window) and once out on the open seas between Sweden and Finland there is no tax on the booze so you can raid the huge duty free shop! Plenty of diverse on-board entertainment too. Tis slightly tacky on there, its not the QE2 but the people go wild on there!

Tip: Fly to Stockholm Nyo with Ryanair, bus into the city terminal, bus from there to the docks. On board for the night. Arrive in helsinki the next morning (in time for parade?), have the day to spend there and then back on the boat for another night of fun!

I dont know what Helsinki night life is like but I wouldnt be mad in Stockholms one and booze is not cheap. So the above option is good as you get to see two cities and be guaranteed good fun, food and drink on board all under one huge roof!

You should easily be able to make the parade. In 2008, it started at 3:00pm, leaving Senaatintori and walking down Aleksanterinkatu in westerly direction.

Boston was the best place I ever spent Paddies day! The session was unreal, would put any Irish city to shame.
