Italy. Poite has too improve (or our reading of him anyway), doesnt he?

France. I like Barnes. In fact, he may be my favourite ref after Mr Owens.

The other 3 I am happy enough about.

If only Lewis and Rolland were a different nationality...

wouldnt have minded Chris White either.

Unless you have a penalty in the last minute and want to go for a lineout.

If we've got to have him, thats the game I'll gladly take.....

Let's hope Mr Berdos isn't the TMO for any games! :D

I detest Kaplan. Looks like we got the two worst ref's for the most winnable games so maybe that's the trade off.

Oh bollix, from the posts above I figured Romain Poite was the guy who did the Munster/Northampton match and I just checked the match details to confirm that. I guess POC can tell BOD how to deal with him, or maybe how not to.

Doesnt Wayne Barnes tend to be a bit of a 'homer' and he also can be tough at scrum time if he perceives a team is struggling

I like Poite he refs the scrums better then any other ref. He can improve the other areas of his game with experience.

Wayne Barnes is really over rated in my book.Another vicitm of the Sky hype machine.

Three SH refs gives us an oppertunity to adapt to a different style of refing for the summer tour.

no Nigel Owens for Ireland this year ... tough tough !! he is the official ref for irish success :D I don't really fancy Barnes either TBO i have to agree with PhatPiggins. I would even prefer to have Alain Rolland even if he is Irish you have to admit he is the best at the moment

I like the fact that the italians get a french ref : at list it is in the middle. The italians get hammered by brit refs with half of what other teams in the tournament get away with.

Shouldn't change the outcome of the game anyway ;)

Unless you have a penalty in the last minute and want to go for a lineout.

    That was entirely Wales'/Hook's fault.

I like most of those refs really.

Didn't they ask if they had enough time left for the Lineout?

    And didn't White say "yes".

Nope, Hook (I think) asked if he had time for the line-out. White said "you have ten seconds". Hook then proceeded to blather about talking to the ref for a bit before kicking the ball. It was a miscommunication, but if Hook had kicked the ball to the corner immediately after White told him he had ten seconds then it would have been fine.

That's my memory of it anyway.

Yeah you are right if hook had kicked it immediately they would have got the lineout and you are also right there was miscommunication which was my point.

White didn't make it clear to Hook, he had to kick it immediately. But it was a tricky situation for White as if he explained it properly, time would have also run up.

My impression is that the blame lay more on the Welsh, but you're right in that it wasn't an ideal situation and probably could have been handled a bit better. Saying it was "entirely" Hook's fault was probably a bit harsh on my part.

My preference would be for BOD to take POC's advice on dealing with ref's and do whatever is 180 degrees opposite.

I'll send over some of the saffers' duct tape for POC for Saturday then, will I?

Would love to have avoided Barnes, I find he gets ridiculously pedantic about the nominated small thing of the day and lets much bigger infringements go while focusing on that small thing. But the guys should be familiar enough with him by now to read that and be ultra vigilant about the 'offence of the day'.

I must confess, I like Barnes mainly because of the France - NZ game (and its aftermath).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,968 ✭✭✭✭phog

Never had any great gra for Barnes but iirc it was he who first saw the BOD scored that try in Cardiff for the Grand Slam. I hope my faith in him continues beyond this season;)

Except when it comes to giving tries that aren't tries of course!

what are you refering to ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Leinster/BOD already have experience of Poite, from the round 1 HEC game against London Irish. I think BOD might be in a better position to deal with him, as Poite does tend to be very tough around the scrum, which might not be as easy to take for a forward i.e. diplomacy may not be as easy if you're getting smashed, or if the opposition are constantly infringing/frustrating you etc.

Also, as was said, the Italy game is the best game to have him for, particularly if he does antagonise some of our players.

There's no point getting too hung up on who the refs are anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,255 ✭✭✭anonymous_joe

Any of the Ireland team actually speak French?

I'm sure a good chunk of 'em must've done it for Leaving Cert or whatever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I'm not sure that the language barrier is the only issue with Poite.

Indeed, he seems to rub people up the wrong way.

He's also very harsh when your being outscrummaged. Which is something we're going to be all tournament in all likelihood.
