is it just me or has anyone else noticed how bad mtv base is after getting.

now this is a channel described as the only music channel entirely dedicated to hip hop and R'N'B.

so why the hell do i keep coming across cheryl cole, JLS, alexander burke etc to name a few, these are fully pledged pop stars.

dont get me wrong mtv base still shows great urban music but i just feel this channel is falling into all that commercialized pop genre.

I remember a few years back i would reguarly hear dmx,wu tang, jadakiss, nas etc I mean this channel shows no support to hip hop at all anymore unless it has an R'N'B hook or singing of some kind!!

the current playlist is not as bad now as it was in the summer but by all means this channel is getting bad.

example: Jay z has a new track and video "on to the next one" been out a while why hasnt it been played? because there aint no singing or pop element to it.

just a joke these days honestly

Modern R&B is pop so what's the issue?

It's MTV what do you expect to see? Videos from underground artists that have never made a video?

Jay-Z's latest is Young Forever here. Empire State of Mind still gets more play than it so I wouldn't expect to see On To The Next One until it's due to be released as a single here.

The only thing that really annoys me about Base (and MTV in general) is the amount of programs they show instead of actually just showing music videos.

so cheryl cole can be considered an R'N'B artist? because thats what im stating why should her and other pop stars videos be played on base.

real hip hop and R'N'B are not pop music makaveli otherwise it wouldnt have its own music catogery.

"on to the next one" or any song does not have to be released as a single in the uk/ireland before the video is played!.

no i never said anything of the kind id hardly call nas,dmx or jadakiss underground artists. im just saying they should support real hip hop artists who put out real hip hop tracks with videos without singing etc on the hook.

i agree with you but iv learnt to accept a long time ago that programs come hand in hand with mtv.

Real Hip-Hop as opposed to fake Hip-Hop? Pop music is popular music. Can R&B and Hip-Hop not cross over? Define "real" Hip-Hop.

How often have you ever seen/heard a new song that isn't due to be released soon? Why do radio stations play the same songs all the time? They have a set playlist, what makes you think MTV is any different. If Young Forever is the latest single it will be pushed they won't play the next one at the same time.

When is the last time Nas or DMX made a music video? The last Nas video was what? Hero? That's not exactly up to date. The only time Base shows old videos is when they're doing their Top 20 or Top 100 lists. Most of the music they show is currently in the chart.

Music TV is dying. That's why it's getting more commercial. Anybody who wants to watch Wu Tang videos is going to do a Youtube search.

When the MTV execs decided to stop showing music on MTV that was because it was no longer the next big thing. That's why they went for loads of cheap, ****ty reality TV cos it gets more ratings. They'll be onto some other trend after that cos if they do music videos the ratings will go in the toilet.

I like Channel AKA myself because while they play an absolute ton of crap they at least make some token effort to play underground artists. Other than that I flick between Flaunt, Flava and ChartShow a bit to see if there's any commercial stuff that's much cop worth listening to.

All of these channels are basically just ads with a bit of musics video's thrown in between then more ads. Waste of time.

I agree OP, it has gone downhill from a few years ago. I dont even like the way it has moving towards Grime (or whatever that modern English commercial rap is called).

Is the lick even been shown anymore? That was a brilliant show.

i stopped watching Base years ago, in fact, i stopped watching MTV years ago....well except for The Hills, i got hooked on it for some reason.....but thats for another forum.

It's all about advertising and playing what is popular, what the core viewers want to see. Sad to say it but it is the Cheryl Cole's of the world that people want to see.

As far as I know The Lick is not running anymore, i used to enjoy that show.

The Lick is dead. To be honest I never watched it on Base. I used to really like it in the pre-digital days because it and Yo were the only places to see Hip-Hop videos.

Shapey Fiend is right, if you want to watch music videos these days then Youtube is really the only place to do it.

MTV Base has been total muck ever since it aired.

Oh how I miss the days of Yo! MTV Raps.........Ed Lover, Docter Dré (not that one!) & Fab Five Freddy.........2 hours of rap videos & guests..........really top quality stuff!

The best episode was when Ol' Dirty Bastard came on with Buddha Monk to promote his debut album and was totally off his face :D

ofcourse there can be a cross over but you have to relise when enough is enough, like honestly can you tell me the last hip hop track in the top 10 without an R'N'B hook or singing on the hook in the last 3 - 5 years?

we all know pop music is the most popular its a no brainer it surrounds us the whole culture from radio to tv. thats why so many hip hop artists switch on us for commercial success.

I think hip hop is best described as culture, a movement but more importantly a music genre so therefore it never be classed as pop same goes for R'N'B they are different genres.

id call a tracks like run this town, candy shop ,camera phone etc etc fake hip hop, id call call tracks like "nuttin but a g thing", juicy, fight the power etc etc real hip hop, id call most commercialized hip hop fake.

maybe not nas and dmx but i was just naming rappers of the top of my head but saying that i also mentioned jadakiss who you left out who has just released an album " the last kiss" in march, now tell me this did you hear or see any of his tracks or videos on mtv or any music channel?
his latest single who's real ft swiss beats never got played at all which explains my one and only point mtv does not support real hip hop!.

numerous rappers and artists have released more than 1 video at once, i never said anything about it having have to be the single to be played, i said the single does not have to be released here for the video to be played! i.e an artists can have several videos played at once!, 50 released a video for every song on the massacare and that flooded the music channels in 2005/2006.

if its down to the playlists that mtv and radio have to promote and support hip hop its simple what they should do ---- change them

Not to pick on you here but who are you decide those songs are fake? Why are they any less valid? Because you're not a fan? Does having an R&B hook no longer make it a Hip-Hop song? Does it have to be gangster or political or indie to be real? Real Hip-Hop is an absolute bulls**t term.

Hip-Hop and R&B may not be called pop but there can be pop songs from those genres. Just because a rap song is a also a pop song doesn't mean it is no longer a rap song. Rapper's Delight is a pop/disco song but it's still a rap song. Why is pop a dirty word?

How marketable is Jadakiss? Not very. D-Block releases never big over here. The LOX never big over here. He's not going to sell so it's not going to get played. Now you could say that it's a vicious circle and that because he's not getting played he's not selling and this is true to an extent but what is the target demographic going to want to hear? The new Young Money song or the new Jadakiss? What's going to get played in a club?

You've completely missed my point about singles and videos by the way. A video is a marketing tool used to promote the song. It doesn't make great business sense to confuse the consumer by having multiple videos airing at the same time when only one of them is for sale as a single. The target audience is teenagers and people in their early 20s they want to keep it simple to maximise sales. Of course a song doesn't have to be realesed as a single here to get aired but how often does it happen? I can remember 3 videos from The Massacre getting fairly heavy rotation, Candy Shop, Just A Little Bit and Outta Control Remix. All released as singles.

Change the playlists, fine. But someone has to pay MTV and if it's not popular or going to make them money they're not going to want to play it. MTV has never really been a source to find anything other than that at the highly commercial end of the spectrum across all genres. This isn't a new thing.

It's not about the music, it's about the money. Which is why I'm always a bit amused when people are surprised that MTV isn't showing anything slightly outside the box.
