Ok,

just finished college exams (for a while at least) and want to bring OH away out of the maelstrom ( to re-establish comms if you know what I mean)

Not sure if I have posted in the right forum (blame the wine) - any suggestions within the jurisdiction or should we fly away ................. answers on a postcard ..

Sweden. Romantic and also very cold, spend your time inside in bed.
Just make sure it isn't her time of the month. Happened to a pal of mine. You'll end up with a very expensive weekend of Go-Fish and gurgling Swedish television soaps.

Might be a bit cliché, but Venice. I went there with my course to study the architecture and the whole time all I could think was how much I was with someone special to share it with. Very beautiful city with some very friendly people. Quaint enough in the respect you won't find groups of drunk tourists wandering around pissing on peoples doorsteps. I'd highly suggest Venice.

You don't need drunk tourists pissing on doorsteps, the place smells like piss anyway. I think the whole city is polluted.....:o:o

I didn't find it over polluted, far better than the water up here. Once you see the lights glimmering off the waves in the water, pollution is the last thing on your mind

The last thing you should do is travel to a more northerly latitude. Florence would be a nice option, but if you want to save money in this recession there are plenty of nice options at home. Just go a Westerly direction, anywhere in between Cork and Donegal. You'll find some nice Boutique hotels for a romantic getaway at the link below, good luck.

Like another poster I would avoid Venice. It's full of hungry American's complaining about the lack of Wendy's takeaways and after about two days all of those extremely narrow streets get very claustrophobic and confusing. It's like being locked in a mediaeval museum that you can't get out of. It's a little tacky to be honest - like Prague but everyone's more crowded in. I'm really hatin' on Venice today I guess, but if you must go to Italy, go to Florence.

It's only a few hours away from Venice by train but there's a world of difference. beautiful, romantic, amazing art and architecture that you can actually stand back from and appreciate, and it's a small city with beautiful surrounding countryside. You could fly to Pisa with Ryanair (the train is like three euro) and stop off in one of those tiny little frontier Tuscan villages - great place to take your girlfriend.

I highly, highly recommend Venice during Carnival. It's stunning and the entertainment is nightly and free. Be warned, last year the temp was hovering around zero at night so warm clothes are needed. But we had a stunning time and saw none of the negatives mentioned here. Ended up flying with Lufthansa, via Frankfurt for more convenient flight times and a better price than Aer Lingus (Ryanair fly to an airport miles off and, well, they're Ryanair...)

Venice is a fantastic city but bloody busy during the day and expensive as hell. if you want somewhere quiet but nice i recommend heading towards lake garda in italy, i was in verona too, another really nice place
