    Is this an American term?

    Me thinks it is.

So why do people on this forum use it?

    Sad

I believe it is an American term. Big pro scene here. But cycling fashion is totally influenced by the Euro peloton.

Actually, I would say the US racing scene is more 'Euro' in fashion than in Ireland....it could be the weather. In the Summer, white works better here. For the most part.

That's all I've got. Time to make some more espresso before cleansing my white Cinelli bar tape.

Aye, there's a certain irony in being told off for using Americanisms by someone whose username is a Simpsons reference.

OP, you are obviously a Fred.

I guess the term Euro was concocted by American Freds that never were any good on the bike, but had enough money to spend on fancy stuff, and dreamt of being cool enough to ride in the European peloton.

To bring it back to Ireland as a reference is out of place.

Euro this and euro that - it sickens me!

I actually first hear the term Fred used in Irish cycling around 1990 - beat that!

More I think about it the term Euro was definately devised by Freds that wana be racing in fancy shorts on the roads of the continent but for various reasons, never did or will!

Nope, the term "Euro" was concocted by those taking the p*ss out of American Freds.

However, it turned out to be the benchmark which aspiring Freds sought to achieve.

It's a lot like the Ross O'Carroll-Kelly effect over here.

Who wouldn't want to be wearing fancy shorts?

If that's the case why is it used a term for cool here???

Explain that - ROCK came about from actual goings on in D4 etc. It wasn't the case that lads wanted to aspire to be ROCK after the character became popular - come on!

You appear to be using the term 'Fred' in its American sense.

    And hence the trolling fails.

    First of all... D4?!

    "come on!"

Secondly... the ROCK character was created to take the p*ss out of the lads who acted like him. However those lads read the book, thought it was great and sought to emulate him, the irony of which the author has on many occasions commented on.

But the ROCK character was supposed to lampoon the D4 stereotype, and mock it. Instead ROCK became someone for the 'affluent' to emulate and idolise.

I like to look good, walking or cycling. It just so happens that you can be that bit more outrageous on the bike than you can anywhere else. If it makes people feel better, gets a few laughs (Tonto and Raam heading out to the ROK start line in their Kaiku kit) and doesn't upset anyone, who gives a crap?

I think the fact it seems to annoy you so much is even more sad.

Freds bug the hell out of me, as do clear violations of the euro rules, but I really try not to comment on them, it's not....euro.
