Beware....Yellow light of death

My playstation 3 decided to pack up on me yesterday, During game play the power switched itself off. When I tried to turn it back on the green light came on then turned yellow followed by flashing red lights.

Ive since found out this is a problem caused by overheating and melting of components on the motherboard, Since my PS3 is out of warranty Sony want me to pay €160 to have the problem fixed with a 3 month warranty, I was onto a local repair shop who will do the job for €80 and give me a 6 month warranty but they said its hardly worth my while as it will most likely happen again within 12/18 months.

Has anybody else suffered this problem, and got it fixed?

Ive emailed Sony Ireland to express my dissapointment in their product, Ive still got my Atari 2600 which is now 25 years old and still works fine.

I was thinking of buying the new slim rather than a repair, but am now considering a switch to xbox, Anyone got any ideas/experiance?

It would kill me if i handed out 160 to repair it and it to break a couple months down the line, id recommend getting a slim. Dont get a 360 because your use to a ps3 now. I have both and i havent played the 360 in 2 years.

Best thing to do, if you still have playstation games you want to play, and playstation games you are looking forward to, then get a slim. But if you fancy a change, you can pick up an x-box and maybe play some of the exclusives on that console that you dont have, there are alot of good ones.

Surely there's another option than going down the Sony route? Do none of the various repair services not cater for the YLOD?

The XBox 360 is good but beware, it is VERY VERY loud. Especially compared to the PS3. I have one of the older PS3 models (not the slim ones) and it's very quiet. I occasionally hear the fan but not very often.

Also the XBox 360 has a pretty bad reliability record. In fairness though, MS replace/fix it without too much hassle but everyone I know who has had an XBox has got the red ring of death. Myself included. Mine came back a couple of months ago and I swear it's louder since it got fixed. So loud in fact that I'm sure it's going to break again.

Mine broke two weeks ago and I got it fixed in Lawless Brothers for €90 then just traded it in for a new slim model. Got €180 for mine old 60gig ps3.

I was thinking of getting it fixed then trading it in for a slim, but the guy in gamestop said they would not take it if the official seal is broken, he did say they were worth €180 trade in.

Where did you trade it in?

how long is it out of warranty, there is some european law that states somehin electircal has to work for a sufficient amount of time, i dunno how long that time should be but have a look into it and ring sony and tell them this, i have heard of people on another forum gettin them fixed that way but never had to try it myself

Yes Ive heard of this, apparently Sony stated at launch that the ps3 would have a lifespan of 10 years, I bought it from xtravision so If I can find the reciept I may have a case against them in the small claims court.

I think this has been widely misinterpreted. Sony said the PS3 would have a life cycle of 10 years, meaning the console will be supported by Sony for at least 10 years. They have done the same with the PS2 and are now slowly killing it off. A 10 year life cycle does not refer to how long your PS3 is supposed to last in this case...otherwise they would give you a 10 year warranty.

Ive been waiting 4 weeks for my launch model to be repaired...im growing impatient.

I also have a launch model 60 Gb, making it less than 3 years old, Under the supply of goods and services act 1980, when you pay €600 for a gaming console its not unreasonable to expect it to last at least 5 years therefore you have a case, I am going to contact xtravision where I purchased it, then write to there head office, then proceed with a case in the small claims court.

I'm with you all the way, but it is a Judge's opinion what is unreasonable, and what isn't.

I traded it in at Gamestop in Swords. They only turn it on and make sure it works. Bring all your wires you got with the PS3 when you are going in.

Lawless Brothers are a official Sony repair shop aswell. Also dont tell them you got it fixed just say you wana trade in for the slim model.

    Hey there.

I work with consoles on a regular basis, in my opinion go for the Xbox.

The elite rarely causes trouble, and even if the red ring of death strikes someday, it is up to Microsoft (along with your receipt of course) to take it back and repair it for you. They will even pay for delivery.

I have found in general, Sony aren't as good as Microsoft at customer support, etc, so feck the €160 quid and go with your Xbox:)

    *engage sarcasm mode*

The title of this thread is such a lie, everyone knows the PS3 only gets MORE reliable the longer you have it. If it works the first time you plug it in, it will outlast your frail fleshy bag of organs you call a body and it and cockroaches will survive the impending nuclear apocalypse.

360's, however, fail before the materials used in its production are even mined out of the ground.

    /sarcasm mode

In seriousness, my friend got this 2 weeks ago, not the YLOD but PS3 still packed it in. he is getting it fixed but its like bandaging a severed leg, its gonna hold together for a while but will fall apart spectacularly soon enough. if ya wanna keep playing your PS3 games, either save for a Slim or try hunt down a newish 2nd hand PS3.

Wouldnt recommend switching to Xbox, you will have to buy all the extras (pads, batteries+chargers, games) again.

There's a brilliant youtube clip to fix YLOD

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr1zyAGwnuU&NR=1

The above link is for part 2 of the fix - you'll find a link to part one there also.
It doesn't guarantee to fix it but it's worked for me back in December and despite warnings the kids flogged it to death again ..... and I'm half-way through it again tonight!

Remember to get a tube of thermal compound before you start - that bit's not said at the start of the video
