    Alright guys,
    Quick one.
I am in the process of getting fit, losing some weight and trying to build a little muscle.
Going to the gym 3-4 times a week with a good cardio & weights program with a little 5 a side football on a monday. So far I am happy with the results, about 3 weeks in.

I have improved my diet, plenty of protein and loads of veg. Any carbs etc come from brown rice or wholewheat pasta.

My questions is can I have to much protein.
For dinner this evening I had.
hand full of brown pasta, broccoli, spinach, red & green peppers and two chicken fillets baked in the oven with a cajan seasoning.
This evening I had the above before playing football but saved 1 fillet for after.

I think the above is ok - generally mix my meals up with more veg and change the chicken with fish or a red meat ( read meat being the less of the 3 meats)
Should I only be having 1 chicken fillet or 1 salmon fillet etc rather than both?
Up to now I have just ate both thinking the more protein or omega3 the better - not because I was still hungry etc.
By having both am I doing more harm than good?

Trying to gain weight? Eat as much protein as you can get your hands on. The chances of you eating enough protein to have a detrimental effect on your body are far smaller than the chance of you eating so much food you'll just simply get sick or stop eating. Go wild. Eat 2 chicken breasts and the salmon fillet for dinner, you'll be grand.

If you are trying to lose weight aim for around 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass. If trying to gain weight try to eat 1 - 1.2 grams of protein per pound of overall mass. Trying to lose weight and gain muscle at the same time is difficult to say the least. In most cases maintaining muscle is the best outcome.

    Cheers guys,
I have heard a nasty rumor that losing weight & building muscle is a hard thing to achieve.
I already have a decent frame, just a couple of months neglect has be taken a number of steps back.
I guess 6 months focusing on the weight loss with a complimentary diet then when happy with the results - change my gym program and diet to something more along the lines of building a bit of mass.

God bless boards.ie - some many lost soles have found a home.

God I need to stop posting late at night when my eyes aren't working. My bad, all I spotted was muscle building. My bad.

When you're going for weight loss, in my experience anyhow, the level of protein was important only to maintain my muscle mass while the real weightloss secret came from cutting my carbs and total calories down. Personally I find it hard to measure the whole 1g of protein per kg of bodyweight so I just went with about 150g of chicken or the equivilant in other meat four times per day with very little carbs and some nuts.

Well this guy did it! Lost 8lbs of fat and gained 7lbs of muscle, in 50 days! I think that is probably an extremely rare result though...
