Right help needed here, our house has been smelling of white spirits/paint/firelighters for the last few days, seems to be around the house and we cant really pinpoint a source. then theres no heating or hot water today so I assume the oil has ran out, though the gauge is locked away in the boiler house so we cant check it.

Are the two related, and is the smell something to worry about?

    Thanks for ye're help!

Buy a carbon monoxide detector - cost about €50 in any hardware store - can be plug in or battery - better buy the battery type a walk around the house with it .

( Carbon monoxide is usually odourless - but not always it can mix with other toxins and then smell. )

ANY appliance which consumes fossil fuels can omit this killer including cookers .

    'smelling of white spirits/paint/firelighters'

    Have you Oil heating?

If so, Its likely to be a leak in your home heating Oil, which is kerosene, not especially dangerous normally, check around the Oil tank, it'll leak under the floor. Unfortunately if my guess is right, It'll take ages for the smell to disappear, often about 5 months.

Turn off oil at tank....GEt someone out..your problem will be, if its leaking onto a heat source, or leaking near the boiler....I saw a house distroyed where the oil stared leaking near the internal boiler......Anyone bleed your boliler lately? somtimes, they dont thread it back correctly and it leaks...or washer needs replacing..

Thanks for the replies, it turns out the oil has been leaking. Got it refilled today and someone coming out to fix whatever the problem is tomorrow. Glad to get this sorted because the house smells poisonous at the minute!

Then, sorry to tell you, you might need a radon barrier or ventilation system installed. The oil vapours shouldn't be allowed to come up through the floor by right.
