Dell Studio 1747 - audio problems

Having some problems with a new Dell Studio 1747. Whenever I go to youtube and try to watch a vid Firefox freezes up. I figured out that whenever I need to play audio in Firefox the program freezes. The same thing happens with Foobar and mp3s. I first had the problem about two weeks ago. I restored the laptop to the way it was when it left the factory and it seemed to fix it. However the problem has resurfaced and I've done nothing wrong to cause it (not installed anything or messed with the sound settings). I did a restart and it seems to be working fine again.

As its only a month old and under warranty should I contact Dell? Never had this problem before with a Dell and don't know what to do.

you should definitly send it back to them

but sounds like it could be a windows update that causing it which would have been gone when you reinstalled it

so if you re-install it again just go straight to update and check if there are audio updates happening if so stop them and see if it helps

Reinstall the sound drivers. It could be a hardware issue, but it seems odd.

I've never done that before. I've opened Device Manager and gone to the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" section. Do I first uninstall them and then re-install them off the driver cd that came with the laptop? Is that what you mean? Device Manager says both audio devices are working correctly by the way. The Driver CD is up in the attic

All the most up to date drivers should be on the dell.ie site. Just go onto the site, enter your service tag and it should tell you what audio drivers you need. It may not be the problem, it's just something to check.

You could also check it with another OS, you could download ubuntu and burn it onto a cd and boot from the cd into Ubuntu and see if the audio works with that?

I was probably getting a little bit ahead of myself with that last bit, but it's worth a shot, and doesn't take long.

you are better off installing them off the original cd first and see if it fixes it then upgrade to the new to see if the new drivers are the problem but yeah you uninstall them first

Oh yes I'm familiar with Ubuntu. I have 64 bit Windows 7 but I'm not sure if theres a 64bit version of Ubuntu or will the regular 32 bit version work as well? Also if the audio did work with Ubuntu what would that tell me? That it's not a hardware fault?

Yeah well i was just suggesting that you boot into the live cd, no need to install anything! it can be 32 or 64bit. Yeah it'd tell you that it's not a hardware problem, perhaps it's a bit of a roundabout way of doing things!

No problem I appreciate all suggestions. I checked the Dell website and there's only one Audio Driver available. It's dated the 16 Oct and I bought the laptop in December so I think I'm up to date.

I'm still having this problem. Most of the time it's fine but the odd time I log in and anything audio related freezes.

I've had similar problems with W7 and an x-fi card. A reboot always fixed it and it has subsequently gone away by itself(assuming it was WinUpdate).

Read the date of my original post and engage brain.

Yup rebooting fixes it alright....until it comes back a few restarts later.

wasn't replying to your orginal post , it was the one dated "12-08-2011, 21:38"

you should learn some manners and engage your own brain before you slag people off. BM

BM? By the way what I was trying to get across was that the date of the original post is nearly two years ago. You might have deduced from that that the warranty is up. Apologies if I offended you. All I said was "use your brain".
