Energy Drinks

    Hi all,

    Moving up the mileage now and starting to use energy drinks before/during/after long runs.

    I got the Lucozade Sport powder in Elverys and mixed it up, went fine. Is it the best out there or should i look for another one else where ?

    Any advice would be great.

    I just recently got myself some of these also and have used them in the past couple of runs. They seem pretty decent but I'd also be interested in finding out about better options. Maybe a pizza or something after 30 miles in Connemara??

    I was told doing your own is just as cheap and beneficial

    I mix a bottle with orange concentrate and water and stick a bit of salt in, I spend enough on other stuff so I am not shelling out on energy drinks also

    Ya you have to replace what you have lost when you sweat, its not bad you hardly taste it. I would be surprised if all those energy drinks dont have salt in it

    There is alot of mixtures on the net on how to make up the different drinks for pre,during,post training. And most taste good. The main one is 1 litre water 100ml squash and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

    But get the salt:everything else ratio wrong and you will puke everywhere. Nasty if its during the bike in a triathlon.

    If you are mixing your own, use lo-salt and not normal salt as the low salt contains potasium as well as sodium.

    Also do you really need energy drinks for running?

    Recovery drinks for after epic sessions and gels for during long long sessions alright but energy drinks? (my personal opinion)

    Homemade recipe for isotonic drinks in these recessionary times

    50-70g sugar
    800ml - 1LTR of water
    Pinch of salt
    200ml of sugar free squash

    used to use this and found it as good as any of the brand name (lucozade and powerade) just make sure to shake well to mix the sugar

    Looks good, only extra thing i've seen is baking powder for some reason ??

    Who would be crazy enough to do that? And actually bing it to a race? :D LOL, Have read your Tri Rookie Diary from start to finish, Loved every bit. Gave me hope, my swimming ain't great.

    The only times I ever used energy drinks/gels was during the longest LSRs for marathons and the couple of marathons themselves. Always regretted not trying out more things during some of the shorter runs because I'd hit the marathon with only one or two things tried. For me the lucozade gels worked well; I liked the lucozade sports drinks but they always seemed to start repeating on a proper long run.

    I've been trying some of the recovery drinks lately.. powerbar is tasty but I never notice feeling any better in subsequent sessions; just went through a box of high5 energy/recovery drink the last few weeks and while it doesn't taste quite as good seems to work a bit better for me. Currently im trying Torq recovery.. and it tastes like muck (chocolate orange)! Maybe its time to plan things so I can just eat a meal as soon as I'm done :)

    When I started this marathon malarkey almost two years ago, I used to have sports drinks before most runs, sometimes during the runs, recovery drinks, gels., etc.

    I don't know whether it was all just perceived benefit or whether I have become a more efficient runner, but these days I just make sure I've eaten and hydrated well (water or water+apple juice) an hour or two beforehand, and I'll take a gel with me on the run, and money for a bottle of water or two along the way. Recovery is a cold bath, and some food soon afterwards.

    So I don't think you 'need' sports drinks, as long as you're well fuelled before-hand. You may need some kind of fuel during the long runs if you are inefficient (or as a placebo/motivational factor). The other (Macmillan) school of thought is that you need to learn to run lean without taking on any fuel, but that's probably best reserved until there's a couple of marathon-type duration races under the belt.

    Dyolralite (spelling mixtake) from any chemist is a perfect mix of all your electrolytes for 40cent a sachet. You mix it with 500ml of water

    Its the mixture used for replacing electrolytes when you have the old heybey jeebies down stairs but I find it works equally well for hangovers and long cycles. I mix it with a small bit of OJ for sugar and taste

    I've heard High 5 Zero Active http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=E0029 is good but never used it myself.

    I have used Viper http://www.maximuscle.ie/viper for years and swear by it, has all the right stuff from BCAAs and Taurine to a load of carbs. The extreme stuff is quite a handy pick me up too.

    But on the cheapo even the likes of Centra / Spar "glucozade" is decent water it down a bit and add a pinch of salt and will do the trick.

    Would dioralyte work? Used it many a time when travelling etc. It's fantastic stuff. Just wondering if it would suitable after exercise?

    Must say, I do look forward to guzzling lucozade sport after a long run. Not sure if would relish dioralyte in the same way.

    This is probably just me but I find cranberry juice very refreshing after a run. Usually mix it with a little OJ.

    A good feed is always the best trick though!

    I used to always stick to the water before and after my training sessions but cramping became more regular during my sessions. I spoke to a friends Dad who is a coach in one of the running clubs and he said that apparently we loose potassium and sodium from sweating and that is what causes the cramps and when you run more regularly obviously the amount you loose increases. He does recommend using a sports drink before and after and he recommended ones that are more tailored towards runners, not just your lucozade, there's a brand called SIS that he recommended. I found this sample pack of their goods that I'm working through at the moment here;

    It's hard to always remember to take something before I got out running but once I do they do seem to helping the cramps.

    I've read recently in the magazines that drinking energizing things can damage the heart in time.
    I think they prove for some of the cases. I'd stay away from them.

    how much do you add to the water. I know its more expensive than powder but i have it so I'll try that first.
    Is it best to use sugerfree mywadi or juice form concentrate and does it make a difference if its orange, summer fruits etc to the taste.
