    Hi there,

Hoping that somebody might be able to help with a problem I am experiencing when running outdoors. I get huge build up of phlem and mucus which I am constantly coughing up and it really affects my breathing and my ability to enjoy my run. This does not happen me in the gym, I haven't smoked in 10 years, I am in my early thirities, no asthma, no respiratory problems.

    Thanks,

I'm no doctor but I would say it's better out than in!
Are you running a long time?

I had this problem last winter and the only conclusion I could come to was it was caused by running in cold weather because car fumes tend to lie in the air as a result of the low temperature. I've no scientific basis for this ahem  theory but I noticed it went away in Spring.

In the last few weeks, I've been able to taste the smog in the air on some runs - it probably doesn't help. Also, the air in the gym is going to be warmer, and usually drier than outside.

I've had a similar issue (and I remember it from previous winters) that leaves me gagging towards the end of the run. For me its caused by a runny nose
and the snot running down my throat
. Over the last few weeks I've been perfecting the art of the snot-rocket, which has improved the situation drastically. Get the phlegm out before it becomes a real problem.
