I read recently that Paddy Barnes, Olympian, was sent home from the world championships for losing his temper after being defeated at the world championships and was facing a threat of being banned for 5 years.

    Did anything come of that?

    Thanks in advance.

The Act of Contrition and a few letters apology meant he only got a slap on the wrist.

    In the clear now.

The lad seems like a bit of a fucking idiot. Remember his comments about not wanting the olympic bronze medal. I'm certainly no fan of him, his attitude is dreadful.

I wouldnt go that far. Although he didnt make many fans with his displays of petulance.

He is a bad loser for sure, which isnt all bad for a boxer, and on both occasions had a genuine gripe.

He is still pretty young and as he matures I am sure he will learn to handle himself in a more appropriate manner.

Paddy has said he was disappointed with the way he came across after losing in the Olympics and regrets some of what he said. He's passionate and his displays although 'petulant' show how much it really means to him.

I think he should turn pro, his style is better suited for it and I'm not sure he'll ever better his Olympic Bronze.

I think he is going to the Commonwealth Games so lets see how he gets on there and we will see

For some reason I forgot about the Commonwealths.
There's only 9 Light-Flyweights that were at the World Championships who're from Commonwealth nations and none of them made the Quarter-Finals so Paddy should be in with a chance of doing something.

He may also get a chance at revenge against Mungai.
Whether there's any point staying pro beyond that I'm not sure.
The thing is the World's are only a year after that again, which will probably encourage Paddy to stay amateur and the Olympics will be less that 12 months after that.

You'll also have the European's and the EU's this year, so there's plenty to keep Paddy amateur. I do feel however that a switch to the pro game would serve him well. No need to rush him over though, he'll only have just turned 25 come the end of the next Olympics.

One of his best mates is Carl Frampton, I just have the feeling that by the end of the Commonwealth Games that Paddy will have seen the progress and the attention that Carl enjoys in the proranks and will want to jump ship as well. The Euros are in Moscow this June and the Commonwealths are in October in India I think - when are the EU's??

Ya the Commonwealth's are in India, checking the schedule there doesn't appear to be any EU tournament slooted in for this year. A bit strange as it's an annual event and has been held every year since 2003.
But the time it's normally on is the same time the Euro's are on this year.

Unless they just haven't decided when it'll be on yet but I'd find that pretty strange. The Women's version is on in August.
