Hi there. I suppose the easiest way of describing it that you don't just become a mod, you're invited to become one. Generally mods are chosen for particular forums based on their interest in the topic at hand and their posting history in that forum. An active poster who contributes a lot to a forum by way of useful information, well reasoned debate and causing the existing mods little or no trouble is far more likely to be asked to become a mod than an occasional poster or a troublemaker. Similarly, behaviour on other forums may well be taken into account. For example, a person with an interest in classical music may behave impeccably on that forum, but may troll every other forum they visit. The one other thing that may be a factor is how long a poster has been around. If someone has been around a while this allows the mods and admins to form a reasonably accurate assessment of whether or not that person would make a good mod or not. This is much harder to judge when someone's only been around a short time. And just to answer your specific questions, no, there is no age limit and you don't have to be a subscriber.

I hope that helps, but if you need further clarification feel free to ask.
