I would agree there is always a need for a proper record label, but the moneygrabbing arseholes we currently have arent doing the job right

So the question is... how do you market it?

    Indeed, that IS the question.

Perhaps marketing hasn't really changed that much ?
Still takes knowledge, skill, .......... money - and one would hope the given, a decent product to sell.

One often hears the cry that the record companies never give a band long enough time to develop citing bands like The Cure or whoever as an example of a band who took quite a while/albums before cracking it big.

The flip side is that bands too don't give themselves long enough to develop - as anyone who can play well together knows it literally takes years of constant playing to be able to play .

By 'together' I mean in the 'musical' sense not the 'at the same time' sense ;)

I wonder how many of those 'Meteor' bands are together more than a couple of years ?

no - based on the experience of a good friend of mine who you probably would have heard of from the punk era until the mid 90s. He wrote commercially successful material he no longer has any rights to since he signed them away, as in his words 'that was what you done' to get a contract. I can only asume from the rise of X Factor, Irelands Talent Show, Britains Got Talent etc etc that the labels have gotten more desperate to make money first and produce quality music second.

plus, do you need to have personal experience of it to have a point? Do I need to die of cancer to know that cancer kills?

Great point. They expect to "make it" immediately, and never have a business plan, or any kind of plan that they've discussed and written down and revised. Plus, most bands have no awareness of their true strengths and weakness. If they could stand in the audience and watch themselves, there would probably be a 75% reduction in the total number of bands in Ireland, when they realise they're deluded!!
