1000 mile monthly challenge #1

Now that the first months of the thousand mile challenge is coming to a close i thought it may be an idea to bring in a monthly challenge. This is one that came to mind pitting man vs machine. Basically it records how many miles you run and commute and the higher difference in favour of running miles is the highest ranked. It can also be an eye opener to people of how much a car is actually needed. So from tomorrow start recording

w00t!11! Zero miles commuting for me.

Or do I have to count miles driven to get to races?

With a daily return commute of approx. 44 miles, I think I'll give this particular challenge a miss !

Any time you use a bus/luas/train or car counts towards it so even heading to races counts.

So ecoli, how far is your workplace from your home? :)
i'd have to be running 350 miles a week just to get close. Damn those pesky kids of mine, and their stoopid sporting activities. It's the couch and the tv for them from now on.

Haha well i have 12 miles to college every day and a few mile to work every evening so me dont thinks this is one that will suit me still will be interesting to compare running to commuting and maybe even prove motivation for people to start running to work for the few extra miles:D

Drive them there, stick your Garmin around one of them, you sit in the car and read the paper or have a snooze and then you get a few extra miles for "free". You did go to the effort of driving them there after all.

Hmm.. Swimming, Kung Fu and gymnastics are indoors. Football would probably only earn me 3 or 4 miles. Pesky kids.

Good idea though ecoli. I've been planning on running the 15-20 mile commute occasionally, but trying to figure out the logistics so I only have to do it in one direction. There are no realistic public transport alternatives.

I drive a 70 mile round trip to work think I would be the biggest looser in this challenge:o

on the other hand i work roughly 2 miles from work and work shift (3 shifts a week) so that will be around 12 miles each week i might do well for once

I do like the idea of this, kind of seeing what one part of your carbon footprint is and then think about if it's all needed. Hope nobodys getting on a plane this month?

How would cycling to work fit in?
3 cycled km equals 1 ran km maybe?

My commute is 9km each way and it's nearly always by bike but sometimes I run.
I suspect I'll still do badly as I do drive quite a bit in the evenings.

I'm already in a big hole and I've not run anywhere this month yet. :(

Any kind of self propelled miles should count, although treadmills probably not for this particular challenge seeing as you don't actually go anywhere?

I was hoping I could get away with just rounding down those extra 58miles and nobody would notice. :(

But it won't stay like that, especially after our trip to Cork next weekend.

I think you just like sitting on top of tables... no matter what they are. I reckon if we started an eating challenge or a boot throwing or herb growing or chiken stuffing challenge TFBubendorfer will be at the head of the table :D

After a long run I reckon I'd win any eating challenge hands down, but I leave the boot throwing to my better half :D:D:D
