my current pc has these specs

    evectra mini
    windows 2000
    pentium II
    38g hd
    128ram

are the current netbooks superior in power to this and if so by how much

i will use a netbook as my main pc if they are vastly superior to my current machine and to keep costs down.

if anyone can reply it would be a great help

    thanks

in terms of processing power is the atom much more powerful than my pc.

how much was it btw. i like that it has the win 7 ultimate as most of the netbooks i see seem to have xp r starter.

do you use it as a main machine

That netbook is much more powerful in every way to what you currently have to be honest. I think it would definitely be worth the upgrade.

I bought it in Currys for 319 but it came with Windows 7 starter . I upgraded it myself . Just a suggestion . If you are planning to buy one you should get a Good USB stick as you dont have a CD rom

But I have to say I love it

Im also running Office Ultimate 2007 which also runs fine . Netbooks are more used for emails and surfing the web but if you keep it clean it should work fine for you . The best part is its Very portible and lite so its great for travelling

which model is it and do you use it as your main machine

how do people view movies./dvds on netbooks. do you have to download the movie and buy an external dvd drive

    thanks

    Mine is a HP mini 110 .

You can download movies and save to the HD but if want to Play dvds on it you would need an external DVD drive. But you san also download software so you and copy dvds and save them on HD. I have a HP G70 17" laptop to but dont use it anymore as I prefer to use this . So yes I do use this for my main Laptop .

You also need to remember the screen is only 10.2" so it is quite small compared to a laptop

Is this machine going to be used as something small and light that you can bring everywhere? Or is it going to be used as a desktop replacement? Where it will spend most of it's time on a desk? If it's the latter, i would look elsewhere, as it really doesn't make sense buying a netbook. Yes it's got more processing power than your ancient machine, but so will every computer you can buy today...by a long shot.

i want it to be my main machine. i travel from time to time for extended periods so battery life and good connectivity are issues for me.

size and weight are not vitally important as once i have a well specd machine with good battery life i can put up with extra weight and size

my problem is that 15+in laptops around 500euro tend to have poor battery life and connectivity options. netbooks have great battery life and connectivity but less power.

500euro or thereabouts is most i will pay for a full sized laptop but i dont want to spend this much on a netbook.

    p.s.
im fed up searching sites/reviews. most sites deal with the UK and US markets. ive looked on elara and prices are steep enough for what i want. their netbooks dont come with windows premium/ultimate either. ive had a poor pc for so long that i want my next one to be fully specd and up to date. if someone could suggest some models it would help a lot.
    thanks

this model is the closest ive seen to what id want in a laptop in the bricks and mortar stores
acer5740 pcworld is there anything superior for a lower price anywhere else. otherwise im going for a netbook

In the €500-600 range, there are quite a few 13.3" machines using CULV (ultra-low-voltage) processors, that kind of bridge the gap between the portability/battery life of a netbook, and the everyday useability of a full-powered laptop.

If it was going to be your main machine, I would definitely go with something like that rather than a 10" netbook. Your eyes will thank you in the long run, and the Core2 Solo and Core2 Duo processors are significantly faster than an atom (regardless of clockspeed). They still have good long battery life on account of the low performance components.

Just go to amazon.co.uk and sort the laptops into 13.3" and you'll see loads of them. Toshiba T130, Lenovo Ideapad, Acer Timelines, loads to choose. Dell have the Inspiron 13z on their own site.
