Bad fill of diesel?

    Need some advice...

Filled car on friday night with Diesel at [edit: name removed] a Petrol Station (nr Clondalkin) - I feel it is essential to name the garage as part of my question - if mods disagree obviously delete.

Immediately prior to fill (5 minutes) car passed its NCT - including importantly, emissions.

After filling car I was home in 10 minutes and it was left overnight. Saturday morning drove car into town and on return trip the glow plug light started to flash - got car home, reduced power and shuddered a bit and checked manual - not too much help. Went back to car to start it and take to a local garage for inspection.

Upon starting, car barely run and put out huge amounts of white smoke - this stopped after a few minutes of running. Took car to garage (which was closed) and will take again on Monday - car has stopped smoking now but is running like a dog.

I know little of cars but here are important facts

It is a 2.0 TDCI Mondeo, fully serviced about 1 month ago, it holds 60l of diesel and I put in 42l to virtually fill it on friday - so was not running it on empty.

I definitely used the Diesel pump - whether it delivered diesel or not is beyond me.

As I say I will get a mechanic opinion but any input?

    2 other points -

If this was bad diesel what do I have to do, both in terms of a fix and in getting s/s to cover repair costs and the reason I named the s/s - has anyone else had a bad fill from there this weekend - I have no doubt they will deny all responsibility.

With the NCT so close to the fill (I have a receipt to prove the fill too) I believe I can prove the car was in normal condition prior to the purchase.

Isn't white smoke usually to do with oil?

    PCV Valve, head gasket, somethinggg?

    Hopefully not head gasket!!

So could be just a timing coincidence?

I would think it's a coincidence. Think about it you probably put fuel in your car once or twice a week so it developing problems a day after a refuel stop isn't that unusual. Also I've never had a problem with that station and I used it all the time when I lived in Grangecastle (Presuming you meant Grangecastle in your op).

Is this another NCT guys wrecking my engine thing?
Sounds like head gasket with all the white smoke?

its not impossible you put petrol in it,,,,have you the receipt for the fuel,,,,does it say diesel on it..... if so ok then i,m wrong,,,,
it could be water in the diesel, if you still looking to blame de fuel,,
shirely you can twist off the diesel filter and shake contents of it into a old bowl you dont use,
then post a pic:D, that should take you all of ten mins... twist off twist on,, fill with fuel when your putting it back on, watch out for the seal on filter, might stick up in the housing then fall off while your emptying filter unknown to you, just make sure its on filter when u take off,

wait i know what wrong, number 3 cyclinder above knock threshold. need to get the injectors re coded (in cyclinder order) ,,can only re-code them once if the problem comes again it needs the offending injector replaced, also check the fuel filter is not leaking,
you need the computer on your car to reset this..not sure its safe to drive ,you could do harm,,
you need to bring to a mean dealer, or a goof mechanic

Turbo blown. Get a price for refit or repair. DO NOT DRIVE car anymore.

Possible high NCT rev's with no post test cool down killed it, NCT rev turbo full tilt for check, if its gonna go, it'll go.

"prior to fill (5 minutes) car passed its NCT - including importantly, emissions. After filling car I was home in 10 minutes and it was left overnight. "

    Turbo problem I'd think.

My guess is its not bad diesel. More likely a problem that was about to present itself soon enough but was helped along during the nct test by the high engine revs (part of test no fault of tester).
Get it checked on a diagnostics computer but do not drive it to the garage.
Turbo springs to mind as a possible cause.

can somebody here with a better knowledge of the area verify that there is a nct centre within 5 minutes drives

Clondalkin NCT Test Center is in Fonthill Industrial Park. I'm not 100% on [edit: name removed] petrol station, but it is on my sat nav, and provided good traffic conditions, you could make it between the 2 in 5-10 mins

Give the guy a break. I think you could be stretching a bit to call that libel. He named the garage in case anyone else had used them and had similar experience, hes looking for an answer FFS

Yes, I know the area well. The NCT centre is only a short distance away from the aforementioned station. I have filled up there on many occasions (petrol) and never had any issues.

White smoke is either coolant, too much unburned diesel (or a new pope :D)

Oil getting burned would be blue/black smoke

Thats some diagnosis based on the evidence presented by OP and more interestingly I could be wrong but when did they start fitting knock sensors to diesel engines !

OP chances are you did get bad fuel it happens ! get your fuel sampled some dealers have little test kits that sample the specific gravity of the fuel that along with a visual after the fuel has been allowed to stand for a while in a clean clear glass jar can tell a lot.You might be surprised how helpful somes stations can be when presented with the evidence !

I'd say very very unlikely to be bad diesel.

''number 3 cyclinder above knock threshold. need to get the injectors re coded (in cyclinder order) ,,can only re-code them once if the problem comes again it needs the offending injector replaced, also check the fuel filter is not leaking,''
its commom problem with this engine,, thats his prob,,,, i,m 100%
when above problem occurs you get flashing glow plug light and engine runs very low on power and you get white/grey smoke,,,,
needs to reset it on computer,,,but if it happens again, you will need to replace the injector ,,,,but hopefully just a reset will sort it,,

The garage in question was libelled. It was claimed that they provided diesel that damaged the OPs car when it appears that this is not the case (and yet the OP has still not apologised to them for the comment).
I have removed all references to the outlet now.
OP - normally a new poster signing up to bad mouth a business gets banned - consider yourself lucky!

a faulty injector (injecting too late) would cause diesel to go unburnt and produce white smoke

    It's not bad diesel.

    Trust me.
