ITV4 has recently been included on UPC Digital. This channel has a fair bit of sport on it throughout the year. The PDC Players Championship (darts) started on the channel on Thursday night. However I have since noticed that the screen is blank with a message saying that the programme is not available to the republic of ireland....

What is this all about? How come it was broadcasted on Thurs night, but hasn't appeared since then? Does this darts tournament appear on the Sky TV platform?

As ITV4 does not appear on the Irish EPG and broadcasts FTA it isn't blocked.

I have always wondered how cable got away with certain events not being blocked. I wonder if the Europa League games on ESPN will be blocked now just like they are on satellite.

This is the first event that has been blocked. The darts tournament was not on any other channel that I could see. Highlights of the Guinness Premiership Rugby were listed as not available in R.O.I. the other weekend but were not blocked. No Europa League matches have taken place since ITV4 was added so we will have to see.

    Why is it blocked?

Whats the effing point in having channels if they are just going to block it?

They don't have the rights to show some programmes in Ireland. It has happened on Sky for years and it also happens up north on their cable also.

The beauty of FTA satellite. It cannot be blocked in one particular place (ie. Ireland)

but surely no-one else is broadcasting it so why block it? Were the right to show this here sols seperately?

ITV have obviously bought the rights for the UK only.

I think this shows the problem of having a small market that piggybacks on a larger one, the rights holder forgets we're here! No-one in Ireland was going to buy the rights for the darts so why not just show it?

Because they can't. As you said yourself, the rights holder never forgets.

It is a similar situation with Channel 4 on Sky Digital. Aome programming gets blocked but as a FTA version of Channel 4 exists without blocking any programmes then why do they bother.

i noticed that Channel4 on satellite had blocked Glee even though it was on e4 on satellite.... at least we know that tv3 must have forced them to but why itv4 would block darts i dont know. maybe an email to the pdc or itv4 might be in order?
